Have You Checked Your Home for Radon Yet?

If not, Hillsborough has some resources you can call on during Radon Action Month.

Radon, an odorless and colorless radioactive gas, kills about 500 New Jerseyans each year, but township officials are hoping residents will take steps to make sure none of those fatalities are in Hillsborough.

The Township Committee proclaimed Radon Action Month at Tuesday's meeting in hopes of encouraging residents who haven't tested their homes for the gas to do so.

According to information from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection linkd to the township's website, radon causes lung cancer much like smoking. It can be easily tested for—Somerset County is offering test kits for $10 that can be picked up at  the Somerset County Department of Health, 27 Warren St., Somerville (but call 908-231-7155 first to make sure supplies haven't run out)—and only requires minor repairs to remediate.

At Tuesday's meeting, township Health Officer Glen Belnay said the health office is a resource available for residents with questions.

"Being aware and measuring is your best defense," Dr. Belnay said.
