First Section of Bypass to Open Monday

Gov. Chris Christie to cut ribbon to open new roadway.

Commuters looking to avoid Route 206 congestion between Amwell and Hillsborough roads will have an alternative beginning Monday, when the first segment of the Peter J. Biondi Bypass opens, Deputy Mayor Doug Tomson announced at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting.

A special ceremony is being planned, with Gov. Chris Christie committed to attending and performing the ribbon cutting. The event will be held Monday morning, but the exact time and location hasn't been confirmed.

When completed the bypass will run from Old Somerville Road at its north terminus to Route 206, at Mountainview Road. The project is projected to cost a total of $120 million when completed, and is designed to alleviate congestion on Route 206 in the township's center

The bypass was named after Biondi in July in honor of his efforts to keep the project alive and secure funding during his time as an assemblyman and Somerset County freeholder.

The remaining sections are not expected to be completed until about 2018.
