Duke Farms Adding Pedestrian-Friendly Stop Light

With skyrocketing numbers of visitors, scenic estate's managers look to make safety changes.

After its first year of operation as an environmental education center—and picnicking destination—Duke Farms has seen the number of vistors skyrocketing.

The annual number of visitors is expected to reach nearly 500,000, Duke Farms Executive Director Michael Catania told members of the Hillsborough Township Committee at Tuesday's meeting.

But Catania added, the plans for Duke Farms only anticipated about 150,000 visitors annually, and the added traffic from the visitors lead Duke Farms to request permission to place a pedestrian-activated stop light on Duke Parkway West.

The Township Committee approved the plan, which may be the first phase of additional changes on the road.

Catania said Duke Farms may present plans for a light placed further west on Dukes Parkway where passenger trams cross the road later in the year or possibly next year.

"We would synchronise the stops to minimize the impact on traffic," he said.
