Report: Hillsborough Man Charged With Assault By Auto

Clint Benson, son of famed South Brunswick car dealer and former New York Giants offensive lineman Brad Benson, intentionally ran over man in Branchburg, according to a report.

The son of a famous South Brunswick auto dealer is facing charges in Branchburg for allegedly running over another man with his pickup truck outside a bar on St. Patrick’s Day, according to a report from the Asbury Park Press.

Police charged Hillsborough resident Clint Benson, 21, with second-degree aggravated assault, third-degree assault by auto, leaving the scene of an accident involving an injured person, and drunk driving, according to the APP.

The report stated that Clint Benson was involved in a fight with Richard Lachner, of Raritan Township, outside the Neshanic Inn on Woodfern Road at approximately 2:29 a.m. Sunday. After the fight, Benson allegedly slammed into Lachner head-on from behind with his headlights turned off, before speeding away, according to the APP.

The impact left Lachner with a fractured skull, bleeding in the brain, bruised lungs and ribs, a broken hand and cuts on his face and groin, according to the APP.

Lachner was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick and where he was treated and released.

The report stated that Benson had a blood-alcohol level of 0.20 percent, is 2 1/2 times the legal limit.

Benson was intially released from the Somerset County Jail after posting $20,000 bail for lesser charges, but he turned himself in again Wednesday after being charged with aggravated assault, with bail reset at $100,000, cash only, the APP said.
