Prosecutor Reminds Drivers of Ongoing DWI Enforcement

Several police departments in Somerset County participate in 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' campaign.

On behalf of the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, the Somerset County Association of Chiefs of Police, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office and the Somerset County Traffic Safety Alliance, Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano would like to wish everyone a very happy and safe Labor Day Weekend.

As we head out during this unofficial end of the summer we each are going to make choices about how we celebrate.

“If that choice includes drinking, be sure to refrain from getting behind the wheel and driving," Prosecutor Soriano said. "The choice to not drive is the responsible, smart choice. Designate a safe, sober driver. Use a taxi or car service. Call a friend or family member. Just don’t get behind the wheel.”

In addition to making smart choices for ourselves we can look out for others. “Don’t let family members, friends or anyone who has been drinking get behind the wheel and drive,” he added, “Give them a ride, get them ride just don’t let them drive.”

During the Labor Day weekend in 2011, a total of 138 people were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes involving drivers or motorcycle riders with BACs of .08 percent or higher. Of those fatalities, 83 percent occurred during early evening and overnight, from 6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m. The Center for Disease Control reports that at a .08 percent Blood Alcohol Content a driver is 11 times more likely to be involved in a motor vehicle crash.

Somerset County law enforcement agencies will be out this weekend as part of the ongoing “Drive Sober or Get Pulled over Campaign.” Chief William Parenti of the Somerset County Association of Chiefs of Police states that “Officers will be conducting patrols and checkpoints in an effort to arrest those who disregard the warnings and drive despite the known risks. If you do chose to drive impaired, you will be arrested. No warnings. No excuses.”

Motorists are reminded that if they see a drunk driver they can call
9-1-1 or #77 to report them to police. Callers will be asked for a location and a description of the vehicle.

“Driving drunk is simply not worth the risk. So don’t take the chance. Remember, we will be out in force and we will be watching, so Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” Prosecutor Soriano said.
