Hillsborough Municipal Utilities Authority personnel and investigators from the New Jersey Department of Environental Protection are trying to pin down the source of gasoline that is seeping into sewers.
The source hasn't been found yet, but police said the area around Route 206 and Amwell Road have been most severely impacted Monday.
Officials can't confirm the problem is related to reports made by residents on Weber Avenue of gas smells in the basements of several homes. Somerset County Hazmat has been investigating this issue since the first reports were made Saturday afternoon, with subsequent reports made Sunday evening and this morning.
Currently, HMUA, DEP and police are working with the Hillsborough Office of Emergency Management, Somerset County OEM, Hillsborough Fire Safety, Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Co. No. 2, Hillsborough Rescue Squad and Hillsborough Health Department in trying to locate the source of the gas.
