Hammer-Wielding Man Invades Sunnymeade Home, Beats Residents

Crimestoppers offers reward for information about Saturday home invasion.

Two people were beaten, robbed and locked in a closet of their Sunnymeade Road home for about six hours Saturday, police said.

They were eventually able to escape and contact police after the intruder left in one of their vehicles, a statement issued by Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano, Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of County Detectives Timothy Fitzgerald, and Hillsborough Township Chief of Police Paul Kaminsky said.

The man was described as  described as a black male, with dreadlocks, about 5 feet and 10 inches inches tall, with a thin build, according to Capt. Jack Bennett of the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office, NJ.com reported.

Detectives are still investigating the ordeal, which began at about 10:30 a.m. when the man entered the property brandishing a hammer and demanding money from the residents, an 80-year-old female and a 57-year-old male.

Police said the man assaulted them with the hammer, then locked them in a bedroom closet.

After escaping from the closet about six hours later, they were taken to Somerset Medical Center for treatment of their injuries and released.

Prosecutor Soriano said the intruder took one of the victims’ vehicles, which was recovered in Raritan Borough. Police did not release information on any other property or money that may have been taken.

Detectives assigned to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, Crime Scene Investigation and Forensics Unit and the Hillsborough Township Police Department responded to the residence to assist in the investigation.

Crime Stoppers of Somerset County, Inc. is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect.

Prosecutor Soriano, Chief Fitzgerald and Chief Kaminsky request that anyone with information regarding this home invasion to contact the Somerset County Crime Stoppers’ Tip Line at 1-888-577-TIPS (8477) or online at www.888577tips.org or www.scpo.net and click on either “Crime Stoppers” or “TIPS HOTLINE."  All calls will be kept confidential.

You can be scared or be prepared. I choose the later. Desperate people will do desperate things. Stay safe and consider home defense review

This is why citizens rights to own a gun must never be taken away!
Barbara Simms December 13, 2013 at 08:07 AM
Right and when the intruder finds the gun and uses that instead of a hammer activist will have another reason for gun control

Barbara, Barbara, Barbara..why would you ever want to take away a persons right to defend themselves? I am a gun owner who spends lots of time at the range. Trust me, an intruder comes into my house...hes not leaving. I'm sure you can argue that the bad guy could take the gun and shoot me, but that should be my decision to make...not the gun-grabbing government. With a gun you have a chance - without a gun you end up being beaten with a hammer and stuffed in the closet!! I choose the former...

I always have a gun at hand. If one of those bastards enters my house he will soon be dead.

Yes, and they want to disarm the law abiding legal gun owner. What BS!

Scary, to think of all these Hillsborough residents with guns. They can't even negotiate parking at the SHoprite, let alone weild a gun. We are in a suburban environment. Guns should not be permitted, here. Sad, about the home invasion, look at the SHort Hills Mall murder. Should all drivers have guns? Let the police do their job, want to fire guns? Move to Montana wilderness.

Gracie, line up to give away your rights I will not! I'm sure an intruder will give you a time out in a robbery so you can call the police. The governent is so trustworthy and always has us citizens with our best interest in mind. It's amazing people just follow blindly along the path to total democracy melt down. Rome is burning!!!!!

Respectful of any opinions i would never tell social media world I am un armed . that being said dont thread on me as you rescind your rights. Good luck too

Gracie...when the bad guys come gunning for you I have a feeling you will be PRAYING for some nice law-abiding hero with a gun will come to your rescue. The police will NOT get there in time. Also, just speaking for myself...I may suck at parking, and do, but I am a pretty damn good shot. I spend time practicing because I understand the awesome responsibility I hold in my very steady hand. I always love reading about anti-gun people who become victims change their views in a blink of an eye! Warms the coccles of my heart when a persons eyes are finally opened. Unfortunately, thats usually what it takes. We conservatives are correct (especially lately!) so often liberals really need to sit back and let us do whats best...its really for your own good! ;) (please dont ask me for examples...it wont turn out well for you)
