Lost Sourland Hikers Rescued
Two women got turned around on mountain's myriad of trails as sunlight faded Oct. 3.
Two women hiking in the Sourland Preserve were lost for about two-and-a-half hours, before Hillsborough volunteer firefighters and police were able to locate them, according to a post on Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Co. No. 2's website.
The women called 911 at about 7:30 p.m. to report they were unable to find their way out of the mountain trails to the parking lot in the growing darkness. The fire company sent several vehicles to the park to assist the rescue, along with Hillsborough police.
A vehicle described as an all-terrain Polaris Ranger rescue vehicle on NJ.com traveled up the area cleared for gas pipelines, heading for the last location the hikers were able to identify.
The vehicle's crew then hiked south on trail 10, locating the hikers nearly a mile away on trail 8. Both were uninjured and the fire company reports "happy to see rescuers."
A separate rescue vehicle and crew picked up the hikers and returned to the parking lot.
The ordeal ended shortly before 10 p.m.
