Hillsborough Man Flees Into Woods, Police Say

Authorities say man was driving while intoxicated before he eluded police.

Ronald Arbuckle Jr., 44, of Hillsborough, was charged with DWI and eluding police at about 5 a.m. Aug. 18, after allegedly leading Green Brook police on a foot chase through a wooded area near Washington Rock State Park. 

Green Brook police had received a request for assistance from North Plainfield police regarding a driver believed to be intoxicated who had been seen hitting the concrete divider on Route 22 in North Plainfield by a witness.

Police said the witness followed the vehicle, telling them the driver had turned on Rock Road East, stopped and exited his vehicle. Police said the witness also provided a description of the driver.

Green Brook police caught up with the witness, who stayed with the vehicle, and began searching the area for the driver. Police said after he was spotted on the north side of Rock Road, trying to hide behind a tree, police ordered him to get on the ground, but he ran into the woods instead.

Police said they chased him for a about two minutes in the woods near Washington Rock State Park, before capturing him. Once in custody, Arbuckle allegedly said, "I should have run."

He was turned over to North Plainfield police, where he was charged with driving while intoxicated, and Green Brook police requested an additional charge of eluding be added.
