Cops: Thieves Luring Residents Out of Their Homes

are cautioning residents to be aware of a burglary tandem who has been distracting homeowners while stealing items from their residence.

According to a statement released Tuesday, police are investigating two burglaries where one individual enticed elderly residents out of their homes while a second individual stole items from inside.

Distraction methods could include claiming to have a dog running on the victim's property, claiming to work for a utility company and volunteering to perform yardwork for the homeowner, police said.

"Regardless of the method, the goal is to have the victim walk outside the house with one suspect to help look for a dog, etc.," the police statement said, "while the second suspect enters the now unoccupied house to steal property."

Police caution residents to be suspicious of anyone offering to perform services not previously arranged. Police also remind residents to verify the badges and identification of anyone who claims to work for a utility company.

"Most importantly, residents should be wary of an unannounced visitor who seems intent on having them step outside their home," the police statement said.
