Bicyclist Flown to Medical Center After Hit by Vehicle

Hillsborough man struck by motorist entering Amwell Road shopping center.

William Smolder, 64, of Hillsborough, was flown to Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center at about 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, after he was struck by a vehicle as he rode a bicycle on Amwell Road, police said.

Smolder was traveling east on Amwell Road, near Pineywoods Road, when he was hit by a 2004 Toyota Highlander driven by Leon Morrison, 75, of Hillsborough, as Morrison make a left-hand turn into the entrance for the Amwell Commons center.

The NJ State Police medevac flew Smolder to the medical center. Also responding to the accident were Hillsborough Rescue Squad members, volunteers with Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Co. no. 37, and Somerset Medical Center paramedics.

The accident remains under investigation, and police ask anyone with information to contact them at 908-369-4323.
