Park and Rec Commissioner Urges Yes Vote on Referendum

I am writing as a member of the Park and Recreation Committee asking Hillsborough residents to vote yes to the ballot question regarding using funds for recreational activities.

Hillsborough Township has done a marvelous job in buying open space, and it would be wonderful if funds for open space purchase could be used for more passive recreational activities.  In this manner, all citizens of Hillsborough could take full advantage of all types of recreation.

The Township Committee has made it clear that should the referendum pass, a “needs assessment” will be performed by an independent consultant.  This needs assessment would take input from all members of the public to find out the best manner to utilize the funds.  It would be terrific if more passive recreational activities could be created such as  new trails and bicycle paths for all the residents.

In these challenging economic times and with the cap imposed by the state government of limiting 2 percent increases to municipal taxes, the municipalities must come up with ingenuous solutions to fund recreational activities.

As a member of the Parks and Recreation Committee, I am excited by the opportunity presented by the ballot question.  Vote “YES” to the ballot question and vote “YES” to recreation.
