GOP Candidates: Communication Key For Township

Candidates Carl Suraci and Greg Burchette tout steps taken by committee.

The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by Republican candidates for Township Council Carl Suraci and Greg Burchette.

To the editor:

This is the third of our weekly letters to discuss specific topics of interest to highlight some of the accomplishments the Republican-led Township Committee has achieved over the years, and to address our vision for Hillsborough’s future. This week’s topic is the successful efforts to make local government more customer-friendly, open and transparent for Hillsborough residents.

Eliminating the no-bid contracts that previously characterized the local government professional vendor process has been a key step. The fair and open competitive bidding process for professional contract proposals, which we have been rigorously following since 2005, results in the Township getting high-quality formal proposals. Hillsborough has established a standard evaluation methodology for these proposals, which allows us to obtain the best possible expert professional services at a reasonable cost.

Open government also means bringing citizens into the process as early as possible. Since 2008, the Township Committee established a local rule that extends way beyond the requirements of state law, notifying residents of proposed zoning changes when they were being initially considered. This has allowed residents to contribute their input at the developmental stage, when it’s easiest to make changes.

The Township Committee provides residents access to information in numerous new and advanced ways. Hillsborough has an excellent website on which all public documents, such as proposed ordinances and budget information, are conveniently posted, along with news and announcements. We have streaming video of Township Committee and Planning Board meetings, and a calendar of events. Meeting videos and news bulletins are also available on cable channel 29. We provide up-to-the-minute information when possible through our Twitter accounts, and additional emergency information is distributed via Nixle services. In addition, the Township runs an award-winning e-newsletter, open to all residents, which it sends weekly to subscribers.

We have also emphasized business-like values of customer service. Several government departments have evening hours, which helps residents who are working during the day. And, inspections from the Building Department can be scheduled on nights and Saturdays, at residents’ convenience. We have also innovated online services, so that sign-ups for recreational programs, which often had very long lines, are now available on the website, as are dog license applications.

We are committed to leverage new communication technologies, to continue running local government in a business-like fashion, and to serve as watchdogs of every tax dollar.  If you would like to learn more about our respective backgrounds and our entire platform, please visit our website, www.HillsboroughGOP.com
