Gillette Asks for Voters' Support in First November School Elections

It has been a privilege to serve these past several years as your representative to the Hillsborough Board of Education.  I ask you to allow me to continue in that role by voting on Nov. 5 to return me to the board for another term.

My time on the board has been one of profound change.  I have personally served with two Business Administrators, three Superintendents (plus two interim superintendents), and 18 different Board of Education members.  Over that period I have provided the constancy and commitment to shepherd major facilities renovations including new windows and roofs at most of our schools, new technology initiatives such as Internet-connected projectors in all of our classrooms and the rollout of computers and handheld devices to our students and teachers, and a number of curriculum overhauls including an innovative Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) program at the middle school.

During this period of continued recession, I have not forgotten what matters most to you—maintaining an excellent school system at a price we can afford.  By continually seeking efficiencies in our operations—the most recent example being the $900,000 in savings derived by revamping an inefficient transportation system—and properly managing state aid increases, and decreases, I have been able to put forth a budget with tax rate increases of less than one percent in four of the last six years. All while maintaining the excellent compensation, benefits, and work environment that continue to attract the brightest and best teachers to our district.

I thank you for the opportunity and appreciate your trust.  I encourage you to vote next week in Hillsborough's first November school board election.
