HILLSBOROUGH — A 60-year-old Flemington man has been charged with leading police on a chase through rush-hour traffic on Route 206 late Wednesday afternoon and assaulting two police officers.

Paul Starosciak is facing two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of eluding police and resisting arrest. Bail has been set at $15,000.

According to police, at about 4 p.m. Wednesday, a township police officer tried to stop a 2007 gray Infiniti on Route 206 near the Montgomery border for a motor-vehicle violation.

The Infiniti, driven by Starosciak, did not stop after the officer turned on his emergency lights and used his siren, police said.

After the car came to a stop in a lane of traffic on Route 206 just south of Mountainview Road, the officer approached the car and spoke to Starosciak, who was using profanity and threatening to beat up the officer, police said.

When Starosciak refused to turn off his vehicle and present his driving credentials, the officer tried to open the car’s door to remove the keys. Starosciak then struck the officer with his fist, police said.

The officer told Starosciak he was under arrest, but he still refused to leave the car, prompting the officer to use his pepper spray on Starosciak, police said.

The officer then made another attempt to remove Starosciak from the car, but the driver kicked the officer, closed up the car and and drove northbound on Route 206, according to police.

Other officers joined the pursuit and traffic forced Starosciak to come to a stop near Amwell Road where officers were able to surround the car.

When Starosciak still refused to get out of the car, officers had to break a car window, police said.

Starosciak then struck another police officer multiple times as police attempted to remove him from the car, according to police. He was removed the car and placed under arrest.
