Summer Sizzle in Politics - HDA Meeting July 10th

Well, our nation has had  another birthday, and after a very busy political month of June which added a US Senate special election primary before the summer is over, as well as historic votes on matters of civil rights and civil liberties, we march forward, remembering our freedom and independence that this recent holiday stands for.

The Hillsborough Democratic Alliance will meet this Wednesday, July 10, 2013, beginning at 6:45 PM at the Avalon Assisted Living Center, 393 Amwell Road, Hillsborough.  Richard Arline,  Democratic candidate for Somerset County Sheriff,  who  has 34 years experience in law enforcement, will be the featured guest for this meeting and will entertain audience questions.  A representative from Democratic Congressman Rush Holt’s US Senate Campaign will be in attendance as well.  Representatives from the other Democratic US Senate campaigns have also been invited.  Note  that the primary for this race is coming up quickly on August 13, and mail-in ballots have already been distributed.  This is also a great opportunity to find out about the similarities and differences in the primary candidates and their campaigns on issues such as civil rights, gun control, immigration reform, the environment, the economy, and more.   All Democrats and others are welcome to attend.  Refreshments will be served  beginning at 6:30,  and the meeting will start at 6:45.  Come as soon as you can get there.

The Politics Book Club continues on August  1st, 7:00 – 9:00 PM with the book “The Last Gun – How Changes in the Gun Industry are Killing Americans and What It Will Take to Stop It” by Tom Diaz.  The restaurant is still to be determined, so contact james.bergstrom@comcast.net  ASAP if you are interested.  These discussions are very lively and you are invited even if you have not read a lot of the book.

Township meetings continue all summer and we encourage Democrats and all concerned citizens to attend.    In addition, there are always significant  development issues that come up in Zoning and Planning Board meetings.  In July there are Township Committee meetings July 9th and 23rd, Planning Board meetings July 11th and 25th, and a Zoning Board meeting on the 17th.  All start at 7:30 in the Municipal Courtroom. Be sure and look up the agendas before you attend, which are posted on the Meetings and Agendas page of http://www.hillsborough-nj.org .

The Alliance plans to continue to have many interesting speakers and events  at its monthly meetings through the busy 2013 campaign season, encouraging like-minded individuals to share in the camaraderie of fellow Democrats and progressives.   Focusing on transparency and accountability in local government, the Hillsborough Democratic Alliance provides all participants with the opportunity to discuss the issues facing Hillsborough, the region and state and the US as a whole.  Please stay informed via the Star Ledger, Hillsborough Beacon, Hillsborough Patch, NJ Spotlight and other publications as there is a lot happening in NJ politics currently!   For further information on the Alliance, go to “Hillsborough Democratic Alliance” group on Facebook or contact me at mbisberg@comcast.net.
