State Senate Candidate Christian Mastondrea visits Hillsborough Democratic Alliance September 11th

The Hillsborough Democratic Alliance will meet on Wednesday, September 11,  2013, beginning at 6:45 PM at the Avalon Assisted Living Center, 393 Amwell Road, Hillsborough.  Christian Mastondrea, Democratic Candidate for  State Senate in  LD16 which includes Hillsborough, will be the featured speaker.  Christian, who hails from Hillsborough and is a former Hillsborough Democratic Committee officer, has run on the Democratic  ticket for local and County office in the past.  He will be discussing state environmental policy and candidate endorsements, especially as they relate to Hillsborough, educational reform/deform in NJ, the significance of Corey Booker’s primary win for State Senate,  and most importantly the Buono and LD16 campaigns.   We also have a brief update on the Hillsborough Open Space ballot question, a report  on the 50th anniversary March on Washington led by an HDA member who attended,  and a few other brief comments.  Refreshments will be served  beginning at 6:30,  and the meeting will start at 6:45.

The Alliance held an Open Space Forum at their monthly meeting on August 7th.  Representatives from BoroGreen, the Sourland Conservancy, and Susan Gulliford, an open space advocate, discussed the ballot initiative that would allow the Township Committee to annually divert up to 20% of tax money collected for acquisition of open space land.  The Township Committee proposes, instead, to apply it to the development and/or improvement of open space already owned by the township.  The ordinance to place the question on the ballot was passed by the Township Committee on July 23rd.  Speakers from BoroGreen and the Sourland Conservancy, as well as open space advocate Susan Gulliford, all registered their opposition to allowing open space acquisition taxes to be diverted for development, for many different reasons, chronicled in this article.  http://www.centraljersey.com/articles/2013/08/21/hillsborough_beacon/news/doc521529876d3a4182813754.txt

Keep up to date with Organizing for Action at www.barackobama.com .  Remember, if you would like to host a house party on any national issue such as Immigration Reform, Climate Change, Gun Control, Jobs Creation, etc., you can gather issues and post your event on the website, coordinate with me to get  the  announcement out  on the Alliance list, post it on the Alliance facebook site, get great publicity, and conduct your event.  It’s a great way to raise local consciousness about national issues.
