CrossFit to Open in Hillsborough

A new CrossFit fitness facility will be opening in Hillsborough soon. Here's more about what CrossFit can offer to you and your family; and why the owner, Dong Kim, chose to open his business here.

Back beyond the Hillsborough Cinemas is a burgeoning business community.  Soon to join that community is CrossFit08844.  Dong Kim, a personal trainer for almost 17 years in the private sector, will be opening his CrossFit facility hopefully at the end of September or the beginning of October.  There are just a few final touches that need to take place before the grand opening.  Right now CrossFit is pre-selling memberships.  If you are interested you can sign up for classes online or purchase a membership by emailing Dong Kim at info@crossfit08844.com

“We are offering  free Wednesday and Saturday classes so people can ask questions, check out the facility, and watch and participate,“ said Kim about the promotions offered once CrossFit is open for business.  Additionally, CrossFit is now running a special offer: the first  50 members to join will have a free Foundation/On Ramp course (group session) with the purchase  any month-to-month, 3 month, 6 month or 12 month WOD Unlimited Class Pass contract.

Everyone who begins a CrossFit program must go through a series of 2 – 4 classes which are designed to give you a good idea of what you can expect in regard to movements, exercises, and weights used for lifting.  While attending these Foundation/On Ramp classes, you will be building your fitness base and becoming familiar with the CrossFit techniques that will allow you to be comfortable and succeed in your CrossFit classes. These are the free classes, which Kim is offering with a membership purchase.

Some may wonder why Dong Kim, a Jersey City resident, chose to open up a fitness facility in Hillsborough when there already are many options to choose from in town.  First, CrossFit is something different. Kim explains that CrossFit is for everybody – no matter if you are 5 years old or 80 years old.

“You need to do essential movements. If you do them you will definitely see the changes and feel the difference.  Essential movements are things like crawling, bending, and lifting.  These techniques have been used by the army, marines, and firefighters, for example, because they always have to be prepared for the unknown, and they need to be prepared for anything, always.  Mentally, that’s the main concept – so you can be prepared for anything.”

It sounds good to me.  When I think of myself and many who have jobs where we remain sedentary at a desk for most of the day, I doubt clicking a mouse or typing on a keyboard are considered essential movements.  Doing more of the activities that our bodies were meant to do naturally sounds like a logical way to improve strength, lose weight, and maintain being fit.

Kim further explains, “I was searching for a place with the right price, and then I thought about coming out to the suburbs.  If my wife, daughter, and I were looking for a place to move to, we would like to relocate to a place like Hillsborough with good schools and a nice surrounding area.”

Kim, who is a martial arts black belt, decided to start his own strength and conditioning business for a few reasons.

“I wanted a balance between making money and keeping my integrity as a trainer.  If someone asks if they can lose 50 pounds in two weeks and you promise that, you lose your integrity,” he says.  “About 7 years ago I started with CrossFit, and as I did it, I saw my own opportunity with CrossFit.”

“The turning point was really having my child, though.  I started thinking, ‘What if she asked me – ‘What do you do for a living, dad?’' and that started the conversation I was having with myself.  I wanted something to be proud of.  I want to give her an answer.  It’s been almost 5 years since I started thinking about this and saving money and starting my project.  My daughter – she was the biggest reason.”

Kim’s business philosophy shows a caring side of him, too.

“When people come in and say they want to lose weight or tone up, I consider those to be individual goals.  My focus is to give people a well-balanced life; not just prescribing programs,” explains Kim.

Kim also prescribes the Paleo Diet, which is put simply by NerdFitness.com as “The Paleo Diet is an effort to eat like we used to back in the day…WAY back in the day. If a caveman couldn’t eat it, neither can you.”

There are CrossFit programs for children who are just looking for some fun or perhaps they are looking to improve their overall abilities for a sport that they play.   Group as well as individual private training adult sessions are available for people to select from, too, and a CrossFit Endurance program is also offered.

So stay tuned for the grand opening of CrossFit.
