Scouts Return to Help Organize Township's Food Pantry

For six years, Boy Scout Troop 186 has helped the pantry get ready for the holidays.

On Sunday, 22 people--Boy Scouts, adult leaders, and family members--volunteered to help the Community Assistance Network (CAN, formerly the Hillsborough Food Pantry) at the Hillsborough Municipal Building.

The energetic group spent over two-and-a-half hours bringing order to an overwhelmed conference room that was storing a bounty of donated food for those in need in our community.

The Scouts, leaders, and family members turned mayhem into order, working to date-check every can, box and container to be sure the food items weren't expired.  They found some dating back to the early 2000s!

They then sorted over 15 shopping carts worth of food into like groups.  The last step was making 100 special holiday bags for the families in need in our community.  These will be distributed by Hillsborough Social Services around Dec. 20.

It's become quite a tradition with Boy Scout Troop 186 to help out the Community Assistance Network—the Troop has been chipping in at the winter and spring holidays for at least six years.

"It's great to see the Scouts and their families working hard to help our Hillsborough community," Troop Committee Chairwoman Nadine Kadell Sapirman said. "We look forward to this service project every year!"

The Scouts looked at the neatly ordered conference room and bags with pride. Another job well done by Troop 186.

Boy Scout Troop 186 meets at the Hillsborough-Manville Elks Lodge on Brooks Boulevard every Tuesday.  For more information about the Troop, contact Alana Bird, alanabird@gmail.com.
