Rutgers-Eagleton Poll Director to Speak in Hillsborough

The Hillsborough Democratic
Community Club will host Dr. David Redlawsk, Director of the Eagleton Center
for Public Interest Polling and Professor of Political Science at Rutgers
University in New Brunswick, NJ as the Guest Speaker at its September 19
meeting.  Dr. Redlawsk directs the
Rutgers-Eagleton Poll at Rutgers University.

A
former member of the Hillsborough Township Committee, Dr. Redlawsk and his family
were longtime residents of our community until leaving for an academic position
at the University of Iowa in 1999.  He
returned to New Jersey in 2009 to direct the non-partisan Rutgers-Eagleton
Poll, and now lives in East Brunswick.

Dr.
Redlawsk’s topic will be, “The role of polling and things people should know

when they read the polls.”  The event
will be held at 7:00 PM on September 19 at the Hillsborough Point Clubhouse,
located at the intersection of Raider Boulevard and Render Drive, across from
the Hillsborough Theatre.  It is

sponsored by the Hillsborough Democratic Community Club (HDCC) and is open to
the public, regardless of political affiliation.

“If
you’ve ever wondered what all those numbers mean, including that confusing plus
or minus margin of error range you always see after the result, this will be a

perfect opportunity to find out,” says Aldo Martinez, Vice President of the
HDCC.  “Dr. Redlawsk will be available to
tell us how poll participants are selected, how the poll is conducted and how
the results are interpreted.  A Question
and Answer period will follow Dr. Redlawsk’s presentation.  Whether you are a Democrat, a Republican or an
Independent, it should be a very interesting and informative evening.”

Dr.
Redlawsk received his Ph.D. and M.A. from Rutgers University.  He also holds an M.B.A. from Vanderbilt
University and a B.A. from Duke University.  His research focuses on campaigns, elections,
the role of information in voter decision making and on emotional responses to
campaign information.  He has received
several grants from the National Science Foundation to support his research, and he serves on the Board of American National Election Studies.
