Open Space Referendum Information

At the July 24, 2013, meeting the Hillsborough Township Committee approved a referendum be placed before voters on the Nov. 5 General Election that, if approved, would allow the Open Space Advisory Committee to use up to 20 percent of the proceeds of Hillsborough's open space tax, currently 2.8-cents per $100 of assessed value (about $103 for the owner of a property assessed at the township average, $368,700).

The funds could be used for development or improvements to township-owned open space, including parks and recreation facilities. Recommendations for the use of open space tax funds would require Township Committee approval, with the expenditure detailed in a resolution and accompanied by a statement by the township finance officer of the funds' availability.

Wording approved by the Township Committee:

"Shall the Township of Hillsborough modify and expand the uses and purposes of the Open Space Trust Fund to allow not more than 20% of the Open Space Trust Fund tax collected in any one year to be utilized for the development, or improvement of Park and Recreation Facilities that are located on property within the Open Space and Park inventory for recreation, conservation and general open space purposes?"
