Storm Expected to Produce 3 to 5 Inches Friday

National Weather Service issues winter weather advisory for area.

Keep those shovels and snowblowers handy this weekend.

Less than two weeks after a blizzard dumped nearly 2 feet of snow in parts of New Jersey, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Friday with 3 to 5 inches of snow expected.

“Unless the pattern changes markedly … this should not be a big deal,” said David Robinson, the state’s climatologist.

The snow began Friday morning and is expected to taper off by the evening hours, according to the National Weather Service's weather advisory that is in effect until Friday at 7 p.m.

"Any snow that arrives before or during the morning commute will stick quickly to untreated roadways," the weather advisory states. "Snowfall rates during the heavier band will be more than an inch per hour and will produce very poor visibilities."

The timing of the storm could impact afternoon school dismissals and the Friday evening commute. But temperatures are expected to hover around the freezing mark, with a high of 35 degrees, before dropping in the evening.

“However, without a burst, and with temperatures near the freezing point, the roads would likely not be a problem until after the sun sets and things cool off a bit,” said Robinson, who is chairman of geography at Rutgers University.

Patch will provide updates throughout the storm.
