School Election Move to be Decided Monday

Board ready to act on superintendent's recommendation.

Spring school elections could become a thing of the past in Hillsbrough, if the Board of Education appproves a resolution on its agenda for Monday's meeting moving the election to November.

Two weeks ago, at the board's last meeting, Superintendent Jorden Schiff outlined the reasons he said supported moving Hillsborough's elections to the fall.

Board members didn't offer any thoughts on the change at the time—but can be counted on doing so before the vote, and we'll be there to bring you coverage fo the discussion and any change approved.

Of course, the board has other matters to discuss and we'll bring coverage of all the issues faced by the board. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Auten Road Intermediate School.

It makes such good fiscal sense to have all of our elections on one day. Further, it will involve more residents in the process of electing school board members. One only has to take a quick peek at the numbers of folks who vote in November versus the number who vote in the School Board Elections to realize the differences. I hope the Board follows the Superintendent's recommendation.

There's nothing preventing folks from voting in April other than apathy. It's a shame that we may lose the right have a vote on how 70% of our property taxes is spent. Also, it was posted under a different article that school taxes could be raised by more than 2% per year.
