Restaurant Offers Traditional Rolls and Newer Twists

Sakura Sushi offers several specialty rolls, in addition to more traditional fare.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

Sakura Sushi

Overview:  Known as Hillsborough first sushi restaurant, Sakura Sushi takes its cuisine seriously, offering both traditional sushi treats and more elaborate creations. Though some traditional offerings, like salmon-only rolls, were not on the menu, the restaurant makes up for the absence with other rolls, like cucumber, avocado and tuna rolls.

Chef’s creations offer more elaborate—and less traditional—creations, like the Godzilla roll (a deep fried roll with tuna, avocado and scallions), the Black Dragon roll (a crab and mayonnaise roll topped with whole eel and black tobiko scallions) and the aptly named Hillsborough roll (salmon skin with cucumber inside and spicy tuna on top).

Vegetarians need not worry, as the restaurant offers a selection of rolls for the non-meat eaters too. Offerings include edamame appetizers, sweet potato tempura rolls, tofu teriyaki.

The restaurant offers a slew of traditional Japanese appetizers too, including miso soup and ginger salad.

Dessert offerings range from simple ice cream to specialty ice creams, tempura ice cream, and banana tempura, which can also be served with ice cream.

Décor: Sakura Sushi occupies a space in the New Center Village Square shopping center, which has CVS and other shops. It’s decorated with an assortment of Asian-themed accents, including a mock-up of a Japanese temple, and Japanese wall hangings. Two fish tanks occupy the front and back of the restaurant, and the staff dress in kimonos to complete the atmosphere.

Entrees: Beach Special Roll (crunchy crab and spicy salmon), Hillsborough roll Hillsborough roll (salmon skin with cucumber inside and spicy tuna on top), M16 Roll (shrimp tempura, asparagus, and salmon with spicy sauce on top.)
