Ginsberg Poetry Awards Present Hillsborough Man Second Place Honors

Annual competition sponsored by Passaic County Community College draws entries from across New Jersey, New York.

A poetry competition honoring the literary legacy of Paterson native Allen Ginsberg selected an entry by Charles H. Johnson, of Hillsborough, for second place honors.

Johnson's “Sunday Comics” earned him the $200 prize in the Passaic County Community College 2013 Allen Ginsberg Poetry Awards competition.

First place honors were split between entries from Grace Cavalieri, of Annapolis, and Fair Lawn resident Svea Barrett. They will read their entries at an awards ceremony scheduled for 1 p.m. Feb. 1 in PCCC’s historic Hamilton Club, 32 Church St., Paterson.

The center will offer poetry workshops with Barrett or Cavalieri at 10 am, prior to the awards event. The workshop fee is $15 and pre-registration required. Anyone interested may call 973-684-6555 for more information or to register.

The college poetry center holds the annual awards to recognize both established and emerging poets. Winning poems and honorable mentions are published in the following year’s issue of the Paterson Literary Review.

The deadline for 2014 entries is April 1. More is available by calling the center at (973) 684-6555 or at the Passaic County Community College website
