Theater Students Plan Triple-Feature Dinner Event

Nov. 1 murder-mystery dinner will offer fun, food and a chance to dress up (if you want).

When members of Hillsborough High School's theater program sat down to plan ways to raise money for this year's planned productions, the students considered what events in Hillsborough have been popular in the past.

Events such as the Taste of Hillsborough events, where dozens of local restaurants offered samples of their cooking; or murder-mystery dinners, filled with fun, live-action intrigued and sleuthing.

So, why not combine them?

Consequently, at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 1, someone is going to "die" in the school's commons area—where as many as 1,000 guests will be witnesses to both great food and great acting.

"The whole thing has a 'Great Gatsby' theme—so dressing up is encouraged," student Caitlyn Irwin said.

Theatre Director BJ Solomon said the students developed the idea themselves—and began organizing everything from the participating restaurants to the theme during the summer break.

"It all goes towards the theater program," he added, with some used for the needs of the productions, such as special effects, and some use for scholarships for students. "It's just going to create more opportunities for theater students."

The students also obtained sponsorship from Lors Photography, and recruited a list of restaurants to do a bash at Gatsby's proud. The vendors will include:

  • Angelo's Pizzeria & Restaurant
  • Bella Pizza
  • Caffe Piazza
  • Catered Affair
  • Halinka Polish Deli
  • Hillsborough Star Diner Restaurant
  • Just Subs
  • Matsuba Hibachi & Sushi Restaurant
  • Papa John's Pizza
  • Petrock's Bar & Grille
  • Pizza Brothers
  • The Roman Gourmet
  • Thai Kitchen III
And more are expected to join in before the actual event.

Tickets are just $10 (or discounted for a table of eight for $70) and can be purchased on the Hillsborough High School Theatre website, or by calling 908-431-6600, ext. 2099.

As for the night's mystery, the students are tight-lipped. They hope to make the event an annual highlight of the season—and a prize to the best costumed diners may help.

But the fun factor is a guaranteed feature, the students say, with diners being invited to participate as characters for the mystery also.

"Just be prepared to dine—or die," Connor McKenna teased.
