Spending Saturday Out of Town

Sometimes, Hillsborough's full of events, but others, it's just nice to go out of town.

We love our Day Tripper Column (seriously.  I'm one of those weird people who loves driving and can drive 14-hour stretches, only stopping for gas.).  But we're not going to lie—sometimes, you just want to stay in the area when hunting for something to do.

Luckily, there's a lot happening in Somerset County this weekend, whether you're an adult, teenager or just looking to get ahead on the spring cleaning.

  1. You Need to Know it’s the First Saturday of the Month: and that means Somerset County residents can drop off textiles, tires, scrap metal, anti freeze, computers, televisions, printers and other equipment at the Somerset County Recycling center on Polhemus Lane in Bridgewater.  The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for drop-offs.
  2. You Need to Know about Kids and Careers: From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Somerset County Youth Services program and the United Way’s Young Professionals Group will host a Youth Career Fair for ages 15 to 21 at Bound Brook High School.  The event’s an opportunity to network and practice communications skills.
  3. You Need to Know about Edna: April is poetry month, and the Hillsborough Public Library offers Edna St. Vincent Milay’s poetry set to music.  Registration is not required for the event.
  4. You Need to Know You Can Help Save the Barn: The Harlingen Church is sponsoring a country concert and cookout from 7 to 9:30 p.m. tonight, at the church’s 34 Dutchtown Zion Road, Belle Mead, location.  The show, which features several acts, is $15, while refreshments are $7.  A limited number of tickets are available at the door, so contact 908-359-6896 for advanced tickets and further information.
  5. You Need to Know about the Battle for Hope: The Crossroads Community Church is sponsoring a free event at Auten Road Intermediate School from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This event is designed to combat the pervasive hopelessness and despair that seems to permeate our high school youth and young adults, and will feature the churches’ contemporary worship band and a guest speaker.
