See Fire Trucks, Demos at Company's Open House

Volunteer Fire Company No. 3 hosts its annual Fire Prevention Open House this weekend.

October means fire prevention month, and a day of fire awarness at Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Company No. 3.

The company hosts its annual open house this Saturday, where residents can see the company's trucks, witness live fire demonstrations and learn safety tips from the firefighters.

The event features music, fun, food, and—most importantly—safety information for children.

From 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m on Thursday and from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday at the

At 7 p.m. on Friday at Lee Field at  in Basking Ridge.
Why Go: 
Because it's a special night of honoring children with special needs as the Red Devils Boys Varsity Football team competes against Phillipsburg High School on home turf. 
Pricing: 
Free admission to special needs football fans. Pre-registered children will receive shirts. All ages can attend with their families on the game day without registration.


When/Where: 
From 9:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday at  in Warren.
Why Go: 
Because it's a live simulcast seminar with author and radio host Dave Ramsey on how to lead a team and grow a business using Biblical principles of finance and management.

Because kids ages 5 to 12 can build their own fire rescue helicopters and earn a sense of accomplishment.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at Central Jersey Regional Airport in Hillsborough.
Why Go: 
To step inside a Blackhawk helicopter, sit at the controls, and get your picture taken with Somerset County resident Tony Gianno, who pilots this workhorse of the U.S. military. It's a kid-friendly event that benefits Operation Shoebox and our troops.

Free. Donations gratefully accepted. 


When/Where: 
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Tabby's Place in Ringoes.
Why Go: 
It's a "purrfect" day filled with activities, live music, pet behavior classes and even a blessing of the animals. A silent auction with offerings of getaways to locales like Sedona and Cape Cod help benefit this sanctuary for rescued and hopeless situation cats.

Free admission.


When/Where: 
From noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday at in Hillsborough.
Why Go: 
To bring the whole family to see all of the fire trucks and live fire demonstrations. There will be music and refreshments and an appearance by Sparkee, the Patriots Mascot. Learn about the importance of fire and its dangers in a fun and educational setting among neighbors. It's a great time for everyone.
Pricing: 
Free. 

When/Where: From 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Environmental Education Center at Lord Stirling Park in Basking Ridge.
Why Go: To step back in time to the Colonial period. Costumed period re-enactors will ply their trades, a town crier will deliver the daily news, and military detachments will camp and conduct maneuvers. Enjoy fresh apple cider, kids activities and a hay ride, or have your picture taken in Colonial costume while restrained to the Somerset Gaoler's wooden stock.
Pricing: $4 donation suggested.

From 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at  in Basking Ridge.
Why Go: 
To sort out fact and fiction of amazing historical photographs and prints of The Vealtown Tavern and the Blairsden Estate. Pick up a copy of a "Ghosts of Central Jersey" signed by the author or just dare to be intrigued.

From 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Codington Farmstead in Warren.

To tour the house that represents three centuries of the Codington family and get an insight into farm life from the Colonial era to the 20th Century.
