Rescheduled Events, Undeterred by October Snow

Snow stopped several of last weekend's events, but many return this weekend.

Snow severed tree limbs this week and brough power lines down, but it can't keep Somerset County events down.

Many of last week's events, including a Diabetes Walk at TD Bank Ballpark, have been rescheduled for this weekend—with Mother Nature cooperating.

Evening Movie:
When/Where: 7 p.m. Friday at the
Why Go: Because you can see a movie in a theater setting without paying a ton for a ticket.
Cost: Free.


When/Where: 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Why Go: To see the modern retelling of Ovid’s Roman myths, and it’s the only time you’ll see a swimming pool built into the Hillsborough High School stage.
Cost: Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the door.

Where/When: 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday Evenings; 2 p.m. Sunday at the 
Why Go: To watch a fuddy-duddy professor spent a summer in their Maine cabin connecting with nature and coping with changing family values.
Cost: Adults-$17; Seniors/Students $15.



When/Where: 9 a.m. Saturday at
Why Go: To see a full day of football and cheerleading from Hillsborough Township’s upcoming stars.
Cost: Admission is free, but bring your wallet if you plan to hit the concession stand.

Saturday at 9 a.m. at Duke Island Park

Why Go: Somerset Home's Run for Runaways holds this 5K run to raise funds to help those teenagers who are abused and neglected, or are runaways. The event will include the 5K run, a two-mile fitness walk, kids sprints, silent auction, entertainment, massages, face-painting and a post-race barbecue.

Cost: Advance registration fees are $20, and $18 for USATF members for the 5K race; $12 for the 2-mile fitness walk; and $10 for the kids sprints. After November 4, registration is $25 for runners, $15 for walkers and $10 for kids sprints.

When/Where: 9 a.m. Saturday at Somerset Medical Center.
Why Go: To learn how to perform CPR and first aid on adults, children and infants.
Cost: $30.

When/Where: 9 a.m. Saturday at Why Go: To see art pieces of native wildlife.
Cost: Free.

When/Where: Noon Saturday at in Hillsborough
Why Go: You need more of a reason than cats and kittens?
Price: Bring your wallet.


Where/When: 
Saturday at 3 p.m. at St. Martin's Episcopal Church on Washington Valley Road

Why Go: The church has release a "Taste of St. Martin's" cookbook, and it's hosting a tasting of about 50 of its favorite recipes from the book.

Cost: $10 per person


Where/When: 
Bridgewater Township Library from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. 

Why Go: The American Historical Theatre will be presenting an adaptation of Washington Irving's classic tale, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," with a one-man interpretation of the story of the headless horseman. There will be a discussion following about Irving himself.

Cost: Free 


When/Where: 6 p.m. Saturday at 600 Washington Avenue, Manville.
Why Go: Because you like casino games and the proceeds from this event benefit People for Animals.
Price: $40

4th Annual Basking Ridge Fire Co. Beefsteak Dinner Safe 
Where/When: At 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Basking Ridge Fire Co.'s firehouse, 30 Washington Ave., in Basking Ridge.
Why Go: After a tough week of trying to scare up a meal without power, let the firemen (and women) do the cooking for you. All you can eat beefsteak, beer, salad, fries, soda and dessert. Wine available for sale. Music by "The Second Chance." And help out these hard-working volunteers! Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Liberty Corner Fire Co's Comedy Night
When/Where: 
Liberty Corner Fire Company's firehouse at 95 Church St. in the Liberty Corner section of Bernards Township. Doors open at 7 p.m. on Sat., Nov. 5, for those 21 and older.
Why Go: 
Because if you've ever needed a laugh, it's now! Comedy night in the spacious firehouse is usually a popular draw. Plus help out a volunteer fire company.
Pricing: 
$40, For advance tickets or further information, call the firehouse non-emergency number and leave a message at 908-647-3530.

When/Where: 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Sunday at Why Go: Because blood donations are always needed, and it’s a excuse to eat cookies afterward.
Cost: Free.

When/Where: 8 a.m. Sunday at 14 North Doughty Avenue in Somerville.
Why Go: Because you can eat as many pancakes as you want at a historic Somerville Landmark, while also supporting the Raritan Valley Masonic Lodge #46.
Cost: $6


When/Where: Just in time for Veterans Day, the Bernards Township Beautification Task Force will dedicate a field of pre-purchased flags at the at 1 Collyer Lane. The 78th Army Division Brass Ensemble will provide music at the ceremony, at noon on Sunday, Nov. 6.
Why Go: To honor veterans and their families, who are invited along with officials and the public. To hear some patriotic music, too!
Cost: Free

Saturday in Motion Swim Fundraiser
Where/When: From 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Somerset Hills YMCA in Basking Ridge. Warm-ups at 12:30 p.m.
Why Go: All proceeds benefit the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign that supports Saturday in Motion, a recreational program for kids with autism and their family. Open to all swimmers, who will be asked to donate at least $20, either by themselves or raised by supporters.

When/Where: 3 p.m. Sunday at 169 North Eighth Avenue, Manville.
Why Go: To see performances of traditional Irish dances, while helping students at the school raise money to attend dancing competitions.
Cost: Admission is free, but donations are welcome.


When/Where: Rescheduled because of the snow, it will be held Sunday at , with the walk beginning at 3 p.m.

Why Go: Not only will you have the chance to raise money for diabetes research, but you will also get to take part in Halloween activities, like trunk-or-treating, pumpkin picking, a petting zoo and a costume contest.

Cost: A suggested donation is $20 per family to participate.
