Red Cross Aids Three Families Displaced by Condo Fire

The Red Cross provided emergency aid to three families displaced by the Richmond Court Condo fire Aug. 12.

Of the 12 people displaced by a Aug. 12 condominium fire, just three of the families accepted emergency assistance from the local Red Cross office.

“In this case what the families needed were funds for emergency food and clothing,” Jessica Alfrey, Community Relations Development Manager for the Red Cross, said. “We met with all the families on the scene and it was deemed that they all had housing options, so that’s why we didn’t help them with that.”

The residential fire broke out before 10 p.m. Aug. 12, and left multiple units in the complex uninhabitable, police said. While no residents were injured in the fire, three cats were killed—and displaced nine families living in the condominium.

Alfrey believed the three families who accepted Red Cross Assistance were all adults. She was unable to say where the three families, and the nine other families who were displaced, were staying.

In addition to the emergency funds, the Red Cross also provided contact information for other assistance agencies, Alfrey said.

“Our goal is to come in and help them with any emergency assistance they may need while they contact any other agency that may help them at that point,” she said.
