To the editor -
I am writing this letter to endorse the candidacies of Thuy Anh Le and John Beggiato, who are running for positions on the Township Committee.
I have worked with both candidates on various projects through BoroGreen, a grassroots community organization that promotes sustainability. Both Thuy Anh and John are easy to work with. They are reliable, knowledgeable and have passion for anything that will promote partnerships and further the quality of life in our community. In meetings they are always open to new ideas and viewpoints, and they actively participate in healthy dialogue. I believe that they will bring that same openness to the Hillsborough Township Committee and will be excellent representatives of the residents of this town.
I recently had the opportunity to work closely with both Thuy Anh Le and John Beggiato as I organized a conference on food and sustainability. “Discover Food” took place at Duke Farms in early March. It provided a forum to investigate the rich diversity of food and food activism opportunities in our area. I know that Thuy Anh and John were both energized by the potential for partnerships that emerged. They understand very well that working together, making connections -- even unlikely ones – is the key to a community’s vibrancy. They understand that promoting and supporting small businesses, not just with speeches and gestures, but with patronage, keeps us strong. Thuy Anh and John don’t just talk the talk, they roll up their sleeves, get their hands dirty and accomplish real things. I can honestly say that Le & Beggiato truly comprehend what sustainability is. They recognize the common interests of diverse parties and know how to work to mesh overlapping threads. Sustainability is good for everyone and its implementation is probably the only hope that our grandchildren have of inheriting a still-viable society.
We have had fruitful discussions about their ideas to promote what is already here in our community, but is often overlooked. They recognize our existing strengths and have the wherewithal to think outside of the proverbial box and help Hillsborough put its best foot forward. Community-building and connection-making is a win-win approach for everyone.
Despite seemingly insurmountable odds, personal attacks and a much larger oppositional budget, Le & Beggiato were unafraid to take on the controversial ballot question last fall regarding diverting funds from Open Space. They successfully campaigned to keep funds in the Open Space fund and voters appreciated their efforts as they agreed. In fact, the Open Space question is what energized these two residents to run for the Township Committee, so I thank our sitting Committee for giving us all the opportunity to vote for two fine candidates, who otherwise may not have emerged.
Democrats, a vote for Le & Beggiato in the primary on June 3, 2014 will give us all the chance to consider two hardworking, creative consensus builders in the November election. Independents, you, too can participate in this primary election. See voting information here: http://www.co.somerset.nj.us/elections/voterinfo.htm
