HomeSharing Sets Feb. 10 Phone-a-thon Fundraiser

Group matches people seeking housing with those with space available.

Home Sharing, Inc., Central Jersey’s affordable, shared housing program, will beholding its annual Phone-a-thon on Sunday, Feb. 10.

Executive Director Renee Drell said the Phone-a-thon, now in its third decade, is one of the non-profitagency’s largest annual fundraisers.

During the Phone-a-thon, a team of volunteers will be making phone calls to raise money to support theagency’s nationally-recognized program.

In 2012, thanks to the support of its donors, HomeSharing, Inc. helped 2,743 people who sought affordable housing in Somerset, Middlesex, Hunterdon, Union and Morris counties. In addition, HomeSharing, Inc. made its 1,500th match in 2012. Ultimately, 3,000 households have found affordable housing through the agency since it began in 1984.

More than 30 volunteers will be making phone calls from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. at HomeSharing, Inc.’s offices at the People Care Center in Bridgewater.

The Phone-a-thon does more than raise money for the agency, says Drell.

“The event also allows us a wonderful opportunity to personally contact our donors and thank them for their support,” she said.

HomeSharing, Inc. combats homelessness by matching "providers," residents who need to share their homes or apartments in order to keep them, with "seekers," individuals searching for affordable housing in their communities. HomeSharing, Inc. is also committed to assisting clients in locating and utilizing other resources such as the Food Bank, low-cost medical care, and other support services. The organization's services are provided free of charge.
