Hillsborough LAX Players to 'Pink Out' Wednesday

Team takes fundraising challenge for Pink Out Breast Cancer Awareness in game against Hunterdon Central.

Hillsborough High School boys’ varsity lacrosse will play Hunterdon Central's Red Devils Wednesday while wearing white and pink uniforms as a special Pink Out Breast Cancer Awareness effort.

The game against Hunterdon Central High School begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hillsborough High School, and the HHS Lacrosse Booster Club is hoping to fill the stands to support not only the team but especially the cause.

The Booster Club and the HHS Boys’ Lacrosse teams sold 300 pink and white “Pinnies” to raise money for breast cancer research. A significant portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation.

The pinnies went on sale at HHS on April 26 and sold out within 24 hours. Students who purchased a pinnie and wear it to the BCA game will receive a free pretzel and bottle of water.

Triple negative breast cancer is a very aggressive form of the disease and disproportionately strikes women under 40, African Americans and Latinas. Unlike other breast cancers, triple negative breast cancers lack three specific proteins, or receptors, and as a result generally do not respond to existing targeted medicines.

Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation is focused solely on this dangerous form of breast cancer and is investing in research to find a targeted therapy.

“We are extremely grateful to Coach Wilson, the HHS Lacrosse staff and all the players for their continuing commitment to this very worthy cause,” Sara Kouten, Pink Out leader for the Lacrosse Booster Club, and a triple negative breast cancer survivor, said. “We all have been affected by breast cancer and I am humbled by the selfless efforts of the Hillsborough community to battle this terrible disease."

While the Pink Out pinnies are no longer available, Sara Kouten will be selling pink shoelaces at the game.  Proceeds from the shoelaces will also be donated to the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation.
