Veterans Day Ceremonies Honor Those Who Served

The weekend opens with Veterans Day ceremonies.

Hillsborough Township, like many towns in Somerset County, takes a day to thank residents who served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard this weekend.

Its annual Veterans Day Ceremony is set for 7 p.m. Friday at the Garden of Honor. A reception for the town's veterans will follow the ceremony.

Where/When: Throughout November at Bright Horizons of Hillsborough
Why Go: Because you have too small or old coats that are still in good condition, and it’s better than throwing them in the trash.
Cost: Free.


Where/When: Friday at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park on Chimney Rock Road in Martinsville
Why Go: To honor veterans who have served the nation with the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Company and township officials.
Cost: Free.


Where/When: Friday at 11 a.m. at the Bradley Gardens American Legion on Old York Road in Bridgewater
Why Go: To honor veterans who have served the nation with the American Legion and township officials.
Cost: Free.

When/Where: A display of 125 flags dedicated to area veterans has been placed on the front lawn of the Bernards Township at 1 Collyer Lane in Basking Ridge. The arrangment, coordinated by the Bernards Township Beautification Task Force, will continue 24/7 through Nov. 19.
Why Go: Because, just in time for Veterans Day, you can stop and think of the contributions from those to whom these flags are dedicated. It's also an awesome display of flags, put up by volunteer adults and kids.
Cost: Free.


Where/When:
Friday, 6 p.m. at Hillsborough YMCA.
Why Go: A new program at the Hillsborough YMCA prepares kids ages nine to 13 gain endurance, stamina and technique needed to swim competitively.
Cost: $139 for a ten-week session.


When/Where: On Friday night, from 7 to 10 p.m. at, South Finley Ave., in downtown Basking Ridge.
Why Go: Rumored to be a fun time for grades 6, 7 and 8 from Basking Ridge and nearby. 
Cost: Modest fee.

Where/When:8 p.m. Friday and Saturday Evenings; 2 p.m. Sunday at the Why Go: To watch a fuddy-duddy professor spent a summer in their Maine cabin connecting with nature and coping with changing family values.
Cost: Adults-$17; Seniors/Students $15.


Where/When:
Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Shoprite of Hillsborough.
Why Go: Because you’re already doing your weekly shopping and it’s a convenient way to donate to the Hillsborough Food Pantry.
Cost: Depends on what you donate. Non perish-able food, toiletries and pet food are welcome donations.


When/Where: Saturday, 10 a.m. at the .
Why Go: It’s an interactive story and musical activities for kids ages two to six.
Cost: Free.

When/Where: Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon at .
Why Go: Because the award-winning organization will receive a donation from Fashion Republic for the total poundage of clothes and other items collected.
Cost: Free.


When/Where: Saturday, 11 a.m. at Manville VFW Post 2290, 600 Washington Avenue, Manville.
Why Go: Volunteers are needed to pack care packages that will be sent to US Troops overseas. Participants are asked to donate supplies that can be included in the packages.
Cost: Free/Nominal cost for donated supplies.

Photography 11 Exhibit & Sale
Where/When: The monthlong exhibit and sale featuring 28 area photographers will open with a reception from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the center at 650 King George Road in Basking Ridge. The show will continue from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 27.
Why Go: To view and possibly purchase works by some of the area's most talented photographers. Live music by Maura and Shannon Glynn. 
Cost: Free, bring your wallet.

Where/When: Warren Township Library, 2 p.m. Saturday.
Why Go: Traveling Literary Theater presentation includes two readers sharing personal accounts of World War II through selected letters, personal accounts, quotes in between singer Maggie Worsdale singing songs from the era.
Cost: Free.


When/Where: Saturday, 2:30 p.m. at the .
Why Go: Reliable teen volunteers in eighth to 12th grade can earn community servicee hours providing assistance during the library’s Lego Club.
Cost: Free.


When/Where: Saturday, 3 p.m. at the
Why Go: Lego maniacs can hang out with other building block fanatics, and create new projects with the library’s Legos.
Cost: Free.


Where/When: Comic Cafe, 41 Mountain Blvd., Warren, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
Why Go: Join fellow Pokemon fans, trade cards and cash in points.
Cost: Free


When/Where: Sunday noon to 4 p.m. at
Why Go: To shop for handmade items, jewelry, tasty treats and other items.
Cost: Admission is free, but bring your wallet for purchases.
