For Girl Scout Troop, It's All About the Right Bag

Troop 60390 promotes recycling bags en route to earning Environmental Journey Award.

Hillsborough Junior Girl Scout Troop 60390 has spent the past year working on their Environmental Journey Award.

The troop has spent a great deal of time investigating recycling and how to better care for our environment. In the process, they discovered Somerset County does not recycle plastic grocery bags.

The troop discovered that trillions of these bags are used each year and most of them end up in landfills and harm wildlife. The amount of time for the bags to decompose is unknown.

The troop collected used grocery bags for about a month and made a banner of the American flag out of non-renewable materials. The troop used an estimated 2,000 bags.

The troop participated in the . The troop's mission is to inspire everyone in Hillsborough to B.Y.O.B.—bring your own bag— and don't use the plastic grocery bags.
