Crews Repair Hole that Closed Millstone Bridge

A whole in the bridge surface meant it closed for emergency repairs Monday and Tuesday.

A hole in the concrete surface of the Millstone bridge, which connects Millstone Borough and Franklin Township, forced an emergency repair that closed the bridge until Tuesday afternoon.

“Around 2 p.m. yesterday (Monday) afternoon, we received word of a hole in the concrete bridge deck and responded to the scene,” Timothy Greeley, Press Officer for the New Jersey Department of Transportation, said. “The entire bridge was closed to traffic for repair and further structural evaluation.”

Hillsborough Township Police issued a road closure alert around 9 p.m. Tuesday, noting that Amwell Road was closed in both directions. It remained closed through Tuesday morning, though repairs allowed one lane, going into Franklin, to be opened around 10 a.m.

The bridge was opened in both directions shortly after noon on Tuesday.

“We repaired the bridge deck and poured new concrete around the hole,” Greeley said. “No further deterioration was found and the bridge has been reopened.”

The bridge was built in 1920, making it 91 years old, Greeley added. Its last inspection occurred in April 2010.
