Board Candidate Explains Reasons for Run

Board Candidate David Wald explains the reasons he decided to run for one of the three open board seats.

My name is David Wald and I am candidate for the Hillsborough Board of Education. I was born and raised in Union County and moved to Hillsborough in early 2002. When deciding where in Somerset County to move to my wife and I chose Hillsborough due to the excellent school system and its curriculum that was offered. My wife Carolyn and I have two boys who attend 4th grade at Triangle Elementary School and 8th grade at Hillsborough Middle School. I am very active in the schools volunteering for many different committees through the Home and School Associations. I also serve as a Coach on the Hillsborough Baseball League. In addition, I have previously served on the Hillsborough Board of Adjustment and Credit Card Committees.

The reason I have decided to run for the Hillsborough Board of Education is that I want to give something back to the town and people that live here. Hillsborough welcomed my family with open arms when we moved here and we have made so many friends. This is really a great community that truly looks out for one another. I am running so that I can continue to make sure we do everything possible to keep our taxes stable while keeping Hillsborough Schools one of the best in New Jersey and continuing to make us one of the top 100 places to live. I want to make sure that our schools offer a well rounded curriculum which includes academic and sports programs as well as real life training and knowledge. We need to give our children the best possible education so that they are prepared for college and the future. If elected I will be an independent thinking member of the board and vote for what I feel is in the best interest for all of our students, teachers and residents of Hillsborough. I appreciate the agreement that was worked out between the Hillsborough Education Association and the Board of Education. This agreement resulted in the savings of lots of dollars and the need to not privatize certain jobs. I support the proposed budget and encourage all registered voters to vote in favor of it when heading to the polls. If elected I will make hiring additional teachers in the coming years a priority while serving on the board. I feel that class sizes are currently too large and need to be decreased so that more individual attention with each student can be realized. The large class sizes create a hardship for both the students and teachers. We also need to restore a language back into the elementary schools, currently we are not in compliance with the state guidelines. I believe we can accomplish hiring more teachers and restoring a language in the elementary schools without raising taxes through shared services and by taking advantage of more grants and subsidies that are available.

I reside on Bywater Court, which is located in Rohill Estates and am employed by MarketSource as a Regional Sales Manager for Sharp Consumer Electronics. I am asking for your support and vote on Wednesday, April 27th so that I can be your fiscal watchdog and keep taxes stable while providing the best possible education for the children of Hillsborough. With your help we can continue keeping Hillsborough a great place to live and raise a family. Please vote for the budget and David Wald on April 27th between 2:00 and 9:00.
