PeopleCare Center Awards Scholarships

The Board of Trustees has announced the recipients of the 2014 PeopleCare Center for Nonprofits  Scholarships for Somerset County public high school students. The recipients were chosen from among the 47 submissions.

 

For thirty years the PeopleCare Center has provided affordable rental space for nonprofit agencies to use in facilitating their programs. The Center has been a presence in the community and has supported the nonprofits in meeting the needs of their program participants. With recognition that education is at the root of all social progress, the PeopleCare Center has expanded its outreach to the community at large, committing resources to provide college scholarships.

The Board awarded ten scholarships in the amount of $1000 each based on Community Involvement, Extra Curricular Activities, Grades, and the 500 word response to the question, “Why do you think community service is important, and what have you done to make your community a better place?”

The 2014 recipients are:

Rose Bauer, Montgomery High School; will attend Rider University.

Elayna Cross, Somerville High School; will attend James Madison University.

Bridget Douglas, Somerville High School; will attend Dartmouth College.

Dylan Flynn,Watchung Hills Regional High School; will attend University of Pittsburgh.

Ian Gallagher, Somerville High School; will attend Raritan Valley Community College.

Emily He, Bridgewater-Raritan High School; will attend University of Pennsylvania.

Megan McKechnie, Montgomery High School; will attend Saint Joseph’s University.

Shane Nuara, Hillsborough High School; will attend Rutgers University.

Caitlin Taylor, Ridge High School; will attend William and Mary College.

Brooke Tooles, Franklin High School; will attend  Rutgers University.

 

“The Board of PeopleCare wants to instill an attitude of giving back to community in the hearts and minds of the next generation,” commented Marie Hughes, Executive Director of PeopleCare. “By awarding these scholarships, we are rewarding prior efforts and hopefully helping to continue their dedication to community service well into the future.”

BACKGROUNDER

PeopleCare Center was established in 1984 as a permanent home for human service agencies. PeopleCare is a private non-profit organization in Somerset County which provides a physical plant to house non-profit agencies and organizations at below market cost.  The Center seeks to maximize the accomplishment of community service goals by encouraging sharing of human and physical resources. Among the services addressed by PeopleCare tenants are homelessness, literacy, child care, foster care children, education, and individuals of all ages with various disabilities.
