Paul J. Carniol, M.D., Installed as 222nd President of the Medical Society of New Jersey

Paul J. Carniol, M.D., FACS, was installed as the 222nd president of the Medical Society of New Jersey(MSNJ) at its annual meeting in May. A plastic surgeon with offices in Summit, NJ, Dr. Carniol has extensive background in patient care, academic leadership and health care advocacy. 

In addition to operating his private practice, Dr. Carniol is director of facial plastic surgery and a clinical professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He is also a member of the New Providence Emergency Response Team.

A member of MSNJ for 30 years, Dr. Carniol is a past president of the Union County Medical Society and the New Jersey Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. He is co-president and a past president of the New Jersey Academy of Otolaryngology and New Jersey Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Carniol is a member of the Board of Governors of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.

In his inaugural speech, Dr. Carniol focused on the ongoing changes to his field. 

“As we know, health care and the practice of medicine are undergoing a massive transformation,” he stated. “No one knows what it will truly be when this has been completed. This transformation has led to very challenging times for all of us.”

In response, Dr. Carniol proposed his “top 10 goals” for MSNJ during his one-year term. These include protecting patients’ health, optimizing public health, ensuring sufficient payment for medical services and establishing quality standards for MSNJ members.

“We can only deal with [the challenges] by working together,” Dr. Carniol said. “The total impact of these challenges outweighs our differences. Whether you are in primary care, or a specialist, private practice, working in a group, or as an employee, working together will optimize our results. Together we are stronger; together we will succeed.”

“Paul is a passionate, creative leader with a deep understanding of the issues,” said Larry Downs, CEO of MSNJ. “We’re confident he will help us address the changing health care environment, and improve health care in New Jersey for both patients and providers.”

Among his other roles, Dr. Carniol is a surgeon for the Summit and New Providence police benevolent associations. He is also a member of the New Providence Board of Health and a board member of the New Jersey Parkinson’s Association.

A contributor to many professional journals, Dr. Carniol has edited and co-edited several books, including “Minimally Invasive Facial Plastic Surgery,” “Illustrated Manual of Injectable Fillers,” and “Aesthetic Rejuvenation Challenges and Solutions, A World Perspective.”

Dr. Carniol received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he completed his residency in plastic surgery. He completed his residency in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery at Harvard.

A resident of Summit, NJ,  Dr. Carniol and his wife Renie are the parents of three adult sons.
