Cancer Support Community CNJ hosts “Save the Skin You’re In” With Elizabeth A. Quigley, MD

May is Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month and to raise awareness, Cancer Support Community Central New Jersey, is holding a “Save the Skin You’re In” information session at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Basking Ridge on Tuesday, May 13 from 6 – 8 p.m. with Dr. Elizabeth A. Quigley, assistant attending physician and dermatologist.  The program is free to anyone affected by cancer, but registration is required.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.5 million skin cancers are diagnosed in over two million people each year and in the course of a lifetime, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer. Of the seven most common cancers in the Unites States, melanoma is the only one whose occurrence is increasing. Over 85% of all skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and adults over 40 have the highest annual exposure to UV.

Dr. Quigley is a board certified dermatologist who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of skin cancers, including melanoma. In this program, Dr. Quigley will offer an overview of the prevention and diagnosis of skin cancer. She brings both a clinical and research perspective to the challenges of finding and treating melanoma and other skins cancers as early as possible. Although skin cancer is the most common of cancers, it can almost always be cured if found in its earliest stages. According to the National Cancer Institute, it is estimated in 2014 in the United States there will be over 2 million new cases of skin cancer, yet less than one thousand deaths from it. Early detection is key to preventing and treating skin cancer and melanoma.

CSCCNJ’s program includes support groups, educational programs and healthy lifestyle classes (gentle exercise, relaxation and nutrition, to name a few) at no charge for anyone affected by cancer.  For more information about CSCCNJ or to register for “Save the Skin You’re In”, please contact Ellen Levine, Program Director, at elevine@cancersupportcnj.org or (908) 658-5400 ext. 102.  To learn more about CSCCNJ, visit the website at www.cancersupportcnj.org or call us at 908-658-5400.
