Old-time Navy vets used to talk about the traditional "short-timer's chain" for those about to leave the service: a sailor whose service was almost over would get a small chain cut to have the same number of links as the sailor had days left in the Navy.
Each day, he'd take a link off the chain.
Some Hillsborough students may be counting down the days remaining of their summer vacation the same way, with a "short-timer's chain" of their own making. If so, they should have 12 links left...
If they don't have such a reminder, events such as the open houses set for today in Hillsborough schools may serve as a similar reminder that the break's days are numbered.
Parents of students at the middle school and ARIS can stop by the schools this morning to check out what's new, and meet with school administrators and teachers. Parents of the incoming class of Amsterdam School kindergartners can meet with Principal Mary Ann Mullady tonight.
There's more happening in Hillsborough and near by—check the schedule above to see it all.
