Each week, Patch takes a look ahead at the important football games set to take place in the local Mid-State 39 area, and beyond.
With the regular season over, some Mid-State 39 Conference teams will go on this week to face the best teams in their Groups, while other teams will play in consolation games, mostly against teams from other conferences.The Hillsborough Raiders just made the cut for the Central Jersey Group IV playoffs, picking up the eighth seed after losing three straight games to finish the regular season with a record of 4-5. Two games ago, Hillsborough was 4-2 and had won two straight games to get there. Two weeks later, after losses to Union and Phillipsburg, the Raiders are back at even going into their last game of the regular season against North Hunterdon on Friday.Last week, North Hunterdon squeaked by Montgomery with a 21-20 win after scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter, according to NJ.com. Sitting in third place in the Delaware Division of the Mid-State 39 high school football conference is Phillipsburg at 4-2 with a divisional record of 3-2, and Hillsborough at 4-3 with the same 3-2 divisional record. This Friday, these two teams will face each other during a 7 p.m. game in Phillipsburg. With a win, Hillsborough can jump up to third in the division and knock Phillipsburg down to fourth. The Hillsborough Raiders have rolled past their last two opponents with ease, allowing only three points against Ridge two weeks ago and six points against Watchung Hills last week, bringing their record from 2-2 after Week 4 to 4-2 after Week 6. For the third time in four weeks, the 0-5 Bridgewater-Raritan Panthers will face one of the most successful teams in the Mid-State 39 Conference this week when they host Franklin on Friday at 7 p.m. Franklin is 3-1 going into the game, and is coming off of a bye week. Franklin’s last game, against Montgomery on Oct. 1, resulted in a 41-0 shutout victory for Franklin.Franklin’s only loss this season came in its season opener, a close game against Elizabeth, which at the time was ranked No. 19 in the state by The Star-Ledger. The beginning of school means cooler days and nights, late nights hitting the books, and, of course, high school football. This weekend, the Mid-State 39 will kick of its season with rivalry games, rematches, and plenty of exciting match-ups throughout the conference.For some teams, including the Ridge High School Red Devils, this year’s game will be a rematch of last year’s.
