About this column:
Originally a sporadic column, Take Five, (take two?), highlights events happening in Hillsborough that day. Here’s what you need to know today: You Need to Know To Give You Input: The Board of Education wants to know what you think of its 2012-2013 budget—and invites residents to comment at its meeting, which is 7:30 p.m. tonight at Auten Road Intermediate School. You Need to Know About Art: The Hillsborough Public Library hosts learning adventures for children in grades kindergarten through second at 4 p.m. Tuesday. As with most library programs, you’ll need to RSVP, which you can do by calling the children’s desk at 908-369-2200, extension 14. You Need to Know About Books: The Friends of the …
Here’s what you need to know today: You Need to Know About Pancakes: Why would you eat anything other than breakfast food, especially when it helps a local group? The Hillsborough High School Band hosts a Flapjack Fundraiser at Applebee’s Saturday that has an 8 a.m. seating and a 9 a.m. seating. It’s $10 for pancakes, eggs, sausage and a beverage. You Need to Know Where to Rummage: The Hillsborough High School Debate Team hosts a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Hillsborough High School. Games, toys, books, small appliances and more are for sale, and proceeds will benefit the team…
As I’m writing this, it’s one of the first memorably warm days of the week. Though it’s still winter, and a mild one at that, temperatures approaching 70 in early March—when it’s still winter—is cause for celebration. Granted, we also heard that it’s supposed to rain, so it’s a bit of a conundrum. As a result, Patch asks residents another question: If it’s nice out today, where are the best spots in town to enjoy the warm weather? What do you do if it’s warm but rainy? Here’s what you need to know today: You Need to Know About Science: Even if your child didn’t enter the Hillsborough Public …
In one week, your Patch Editor is shipping up to Boston. It’s the time of year for Saint Patrick’s Day, and that means it’s time for Eileen’s annual trip out of New Jersey. She’ll be leaving March 14 and returning March 19. What’s that mean if you have an event or story happening during those dates? If you let Eileen know about it now, she’ll see about arranging coverage while she’s away. She can be reached at Eileen.Oldfield@patch.com or on the phone at 908-552-9983. Here’s what you need to know today: You Need to Know It’s for Democrats: The Hillsborough Democratic Alliance meets at 7 p.m. …
Development? It’s a hot topic in Hillsborough. With the Planning Board hearing on the proposed Green Village development continuing March 22, and several storefronts now becoming vacant, Hillsborough Patch has to ask—would residents be more likely to accept the development if it were shops rather than housing? For those who haven’t followed the Planning Board, the Green Village development—which is still undergoing a site plan hearing—is a 469-unit apartment complex, 130-room extended stay hotel, and a 20,000 square foot retail space, proposed for a section of Route 206 that’s across from …
When you’re a kid, there’s often no better place to be than the Hillsborough Public Library. When you're a caretaker, those programs can provide a much-needed break. That’s probably why many of the kids programs fill up so quickly—and why many require an RSVP in advance of the program date. As a result, Hillsborough Patch will be tweaking how Take Five handles the library’s happenings. Instead of listing the events day-of, we’ll try to give one day’s notice for the events, so people can RSVP earlier. Here’s what you need to know today: You Need to Know It’s Missing: Marek Gabor and Denisa …
A preliminary school budget will be presented Monday that outlines plans, new equipments and programs and other features for the 2012-2013 school year. It's important to remember that the budget that's presented can still undergo changes before the April vote—so residents who want to express their opinions are invited to attend Board of Education meetings on March 5, 12, and 26. All the meetings are set for 7:30 p.m. at Auten Road Intermediate School. Here’s where to find Patch this week: Monday: The Board of Education will have its preliminary budget hearing and vote during a special meeting…
There’s no debate about it—if you’re looking to satisfy garage-sale shopping urges, the Hillsborough Debate Team’s Rummage Sale is the place to be. The annual sale is the award-winning team’s biggest fundraiser, and is set for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Hillsborough High School. The supporter—or residents looking to offload that lamp/figure/curio that seemed like a good buy in college (Hey, it’s vintage!)—donate the goods, and proceeds from the sale help offset the travel costs that come with going to debate competitions. Here’s what you need to know today: You Need to Know About Robots: The …
Job hunting? Instead of the normal spot at the desk, at a temp agency or on the couch, bring your skills to the Hillsborough Public Library from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. That’s when the library will host New Jersey Works at Your Library, an introduction to the job-search services available through the library. Those services include classes on computer basics, business databases, programs on job searches for workers who are over 40, and one-on-one resume help. In addition to the library’s services, community partners from local government, civic and non-profit groups will be at the event, to …
Flags will fly half-staff in Hillsborough today in memory of Hillsborough Township Police Lieutenant Victor Kubisch. Lt. Kubisch passed away Friday night, according to an announcement made during Tuesday night’s Township Committee meeting. He served Hillsborough Township as a police officer since 1981, and retired in 2011. An obituary printed in the Courier News and available on Legacy.com states the cause of death as Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Here’s what you need to know today: You Need to Know It’s Cancelled: Today’s Preschool Book Club at the …
Valentines Day past, which means only one thing. Easter candy is already on the shelves, including the ubiquitous marshmallow Peep. The packages of yellow, blue, pink, purple and white birds and bunnies, along with the necessary Cadbury eggs, used to signal the start of the spring season—though the Peeps have since diversified (or bled) into other occasions. Some argue the sugar-covered marshmallow birds are tasteless, textureless routes to a quick sugar high and an even quicker sugar crash. Others would prefer to put the candy through rounds of scientific tests. Or, if you’re inclined to eat…
Two Hillsborough shops are slated to close this year. Though it’s news that Kmart and Blockbuster Video will soon close down shop in Hillsborough, it’s hardly unexpected. Comments on the Hillsborough Patch Facebook showed little wonder about either store closing, with residents noting that they preferred shopping at WalMart or Target or that they just get movies from NetFlix or other, similar services. With the two empty storefronts, what would you prefer to see in the Blockbuster and Kmart spots? We’ve heard residents requests for a Trader Joe’s somewhere in town, a Retro Fitness, and your …
It’s about 20 days until St. Patrick’s Day, and Patch fans who remember last year know what that means. It almost time for your editor’s annual pilgrimage to Boston. That’s right, Eileen will be headed to Beantown for her usual March vacation. Of course, the site will be updated while she’s away—but it’s important to know what’s going to happen while she’s away. Here’s what you need to know if your event is during Eileen’s vacation: You Need to Know: Eileen leaves for vacation on March 14. If you have an event that needs a preview article, please email her today—not March 13. You Need to Know…
Well, it couldn't last forever. After two days of wonderful, warm and—okay, I actually had a two-day long headache during it—mostly unseasonable weather, we're back to February. As I'm writing this, it's cold, dreary, wet and gray. In other words, normal February weather. If you're superstitious, or just willing to ignore that six weeks until Spring and six weeks left in Winter are the same thing, you could blame the groundhog. But, then you have to ask—which groundhog do you consult? Punxsutawney Phil? Milltown Mel? Or, as we've heard from Hillsborough Massage Therapy, the more local …
What do you do when Mother Nature offers a mild day during a typically chilly month? Get out and enjoy it, which is what many residents seemed to do yesterday. A few friends managed bike rides through town—whether that’s Hillsborough or a neighboring one—because of the warm weather. Other residents in town could be seen running the town’s sidewalks (or roads), clad in shorts and light jackets rather than layers of running tights and gear. We didn’t get to any of the town’s parks or playgrounds, but we’re assuming the kids had a blast playing outdoors. How have you enjoyed the unseasonably …
Free on Thursday between 4 and 6? Come meet the people behind Hillsborough Patch! The Hillsborough Patch crew will be at the public library from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, for an informal meet and greet. You’ll be able to learn about what goes into running the site, as well as how it can suit your needs. Local Editor Eileen Oldfield and Advertising Manager Elaine Richman will be on-hand to speak about their experiences around town. Here’s what you need to know today: You Need to Know About Art: The Hillsborough Public Library hosts Art Adventures, a program where kids learn about and artist …
The Hillsborough Municipal Complex’s roof renovations continued Monday, as its new Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning unit was installed on the building. The construction occurred while the building was closed for the President’s Day holiday. It’s part of a $2.1 million project that will replace the building roof, install the new HVAC system and place solar panels on the building. The agreement, developed by Siemens, the Township's Energy Service Company, includes replacing the 20-year-old building roof and HVAC system, as well as installing newer energy technology. The project carries …
Editor's Note: Today's colum is from Hillsborough's History/REACH supervisor, Matt Mingle. Happy President's Day, Hillsborough! Who will we be celebrating today? George Washington? Washington and Abraham Lincoln? All American presidents? I guess it all depends on where you put the apostrophe. Actually, the apostrophe issue is moot; there is no such holiday as Presidents (or President’s or Presidents’) Day. The holiday honors George Washington and bears only his name in state and federal law. Washington’s Birthday, first officially celebrated on Feb. 22, 1880, was added to the list of federal …
Over the past six weeks, Hillsborough High School's RoboRaiders designed, built, wired and programmed their own robot to compete in this year's round of FIRST Robotic Competitions. The game this year—we haven't heard any hints—is Rebound Rumble, so we're excited to see how the students' robot takes to it. But the team's efforts go beyond the designing and building side. During the process, they'll work on promoting the team through their website, organizing and creating community events, and working on other outreach projects. Here's where we'll be this week: Tuesday: The RoboRaiders are …
Hillsborough Patch is preparing to host the first of its soon-to-be regular monthly office hours—and we really want to meet you! We'll be hosting an informal meet and greet from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Hillsborough Public Library. You can learn a little bit about the site, what goes into running it as well as how to use the online news site. So, remember, come by the library Feb. 23 and take an opportunity to meet and speak to your friendly neighborhood Patch folk! We'll see you then! Here's what you need to know today: You Need to Know About Tools: Children ages two to six can enjoy a …
