Good news (hopefully)! According to the KIMCO website, it looks like Weis Markets will be moving into the vacancy left by Pathmark last April in the Hillsborough Promenade on Route 206.
At the time of writing this blog, I had placed a call to the agent handling the property. However, I had not heard back for comment on this issue. All indications are that the KIMCO website is up-to-date regarding this particular (former) vacancy in the Hillsborough Promenade.
I had spoken to Township Committeeman Frank DelCore, and he said, “the Business Advocate office heard that this was a possibility.”
DelCore could not confirm that the lease had been signed, or if it still was in the process of being signed, but indications look like Hillsborough may be getting another supermarket and one less commercial vacancy.
As of right now, I am not sure of when Weis Markets will be opening here. The Weis Markets website does not have Hillsborough listed in its store locator database yet. So, I suppose we’ll all have to stay tuned!
Personally, I’m thrilled to see another supermarket move into that location. It alleviates a lot of the parking and shopping congestion over by ShopRite, and gives residents another choice. It’s also really nice to see another anchor store there. When Pathmark was in that location, it was always convenient to do “one stop shopping” in the Hillsborough Promenade; get my groceries, gardening supplies (at Lowe’s), and pick up some clothes (at Kohl’s). Oh yes, of course there are many more stores in that plaza. But you know what I mean.
All I have left to say on this issue is: “Welcome Weis!”

Excellent news, if it comes to fruition!
My family really misses the convenience of having Pathmark there, so it would be great to have a new supermarket in that location!

Anyone know much about Weis? As far as I can tell, the only NJ stores are in far North Jersey... Based on this week's ad, I'm getting kind of a Stop & Shop vibe. Definitely not the Wegmans/Whole Foods/Trader Joe's "upscale" vibe some were hoping for :-(

I've never heard of Weis before. Is it a regular/ high-end/ budget chain? Regardless, it's great if they could get another tenant in there. Hopefully they can also fill the old Cost Cutters store soon, too.

I use to live near a Weis and I liked it a lot. I love ShopRite but not a fan of the congestion there. Not a huge fan of Stop and Shop so will be happy if Weis moves in.

I know it's a chain mainly in PA. It was the primary supermarket for my friend's family when they moved out to an Allentown suburb back in the early 90's, but I don't think I've stepped foot in one since then. It's definitely not high end like a Whole Foods. I do agree though that getting something in there is good!

So happy for another supermarket! Really missed pathmark there. People were nice and you were in an out. Really hate going into shoprite in hillsborough. Employee are not nice or accommodating. Plus, it's dirty and congested there! Unpleasant! Started going to the shoprite in somerville. Much nicer and cleaner. But new supermarket by kohls will be more convenient! Thank you for the good news!

Told my neighbors this news, they are excited to hear that a supermarket will be replacing the Pathmark. They, my self and my family liked going there for the the reasons already mentioned. It was friendly and not congested.

Helen, I was surprised at your comments regarding the Hillsborough ShopRite. I find the employees polite, friendly, and extremely accommodating. The store is clean. It may be congested, but that may be a result of their prices.
Convenience depends on where you live. It seems as though the more northern end of town will certainly appreciate having a food store at the former Pathmark location.

Weis Markets is highly successful in Southeastern and Central PA, very customer focused, not fancy but decent company with good products. Folks around town need to give them a chance before pre-judging. If Whole Foods or Trader Joes felt there was potential for their level of products here they would have moved in already.

I lived in Reading, PA and shopped at Weis since about 1960. It's a great store. I'm hoping they bring all the great deli items that I miss. I also just miss the convenience of having the store in that location. Trying to park at ShopRite is a major pain!

It's interesting how many people comment that they miss Pathmark because it wasn't crowded, then wonder why it closed and a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's hasn't jumped at the chance to move into the space. Pathmark closed b/c no one shopped there. I read a lot of complaints about Shop Rite being "too crowded". Well the reason Shop Rite is so crowded is because they offer the best prices. I find it hard to believe that the average Hillsborough resident would shop at a Whole Foods on a regular basis knowing that their prices would be higher than Stop & Shop, Pathmark or Shop Rite. Same goes for the big chain restaurants like PF Changs. We had a large national chain in Famous Dave's and there was never anyone in the place. Until Hillsborough proves it can support multiple big national chains, we're not going to get any new ones. We clearly can support Shop Rite and Applesbees. Maybe that is our limit.

Sometimes people will pay more for variety and convenience. For example, if I were given more organic, natural, fresh, and gourmet food choices at a supermarket, I would go there instead of the one with the "best prices". Same thing goes for convenience. If I can zip in and zip out of a store without circling the lot for a parking space and it's closer to my house, you bet I will go there, even if they don't have the cheapest products in town.

The Hillsborough Pathmark was just one of the over 60 closures in the area in the past two years by the parent company A&P that filed bankruptcy protection. A&P at one time had over 15,000 stores nation wide and now they have around 340. So the closures had more to do with years of corporate mismanagement and so they were only able to keep their top stores open after the bankruptcy restructuring. I am sure a company like WIES did their research before considering the potential move to Hillsborough and their ability to make a profit at that location. In the town where I came from we had 2 A&P supermarkets, the both closed down years ago. The larger store was taken over by a local food store and is still doing a thriving business today.

Laura, your comment about being willing buy higher-end foods and to pay more for your food in exchange for more parking and a store closer to your home illustrates how lucky you are to be able to have that budgetary choice. Although we may perceive that everyone in Hillsborough is that fortunate, it is important to remember that for many residents price is the most important consideration.
That said, although I, like you, am lucky enough to be able to afford to shop at my choice of food stores, I still choose ShopRite.

What it comes down to is that it is natural for us to shop on price and not total cost. If we want the benefit of the store and the nice place to live, we have to support it independent of temporary cost variances (sales). This is the "Bg Box" problem. I can see a store of tommorrow where items are priced "Item Cost" + "Overhead Cost" so we appreciate how much it costs for people and electricity and rent and property taxes. We all need to appreciate these things if we are going to go to a "web future" where we think we all buy on price. WE DONT! we buy on quality of life as well, i.e. the ability to have nice stores and places to visit, walk thru, interact, etc. Only if we recognize this cna we get off the discussion of "cost" and "Price". Nice store, full parking lot, OK prices that dont bust my pocket, GREAT

Here's the excerpt from my blog that talks about this specifically: “Everything all fits together,” commented Delcore in regard to how eventually, new development in Hillsborough will lead to bringing in more people from outside of town and benefiting the local economy. “With the GSA [Depot] Project, there are about 40 acres [of the 321 acre site] which can be used for new commercial businesses like an ice rink, bowling alley, a laser tag arena, or recreational use, in the same complex where the ballparks will be built. So that would suffice the request residents have made about getting more businesses in town that provide places for families and children to go on weekends and in their free time, right in town.”

Laura, The things I miss from Reading are garlic balogna, smoked sausage (real PA Dutch, not Hillshire Farms), pepper cabbage (cabbage and green pepper slaw with a vinegar based dressing, a must-have with PA Dutch chicken Pot Pie), and ring balogna, just to name a few. It's hard to describe the flavors of any of these, but if I had the money, I would have opened a store a long time ago offering these items.

I like to give you my opinion as a resident on the West side of Hillsborough. For convenience, I usually shop on the Route 202 corridor. I'm not familiar with Weis, but am happy to hear they are considering the site because I frequently shop at Kohl's, Lowe's and Home Goods and would like the convenience; I did occasionally shop at Pathmark. If Weis has a good product, I'm willing to travel the extra miles. And having just returned to work after being unemployed for 2-1/2 years see an opportunity for more jobs in Hillsborough. Yay!

I am surprised by the length of time needed to retrofit the store, but based on personal experience, getting construction work inspected and improved in this town is a challenge at times. Wouldn't it be great if the township administration could work with Weis to expedite (not cut corners) wherever possible to get this store and the new jobs it will bring up and running in 2012!

Absolutely NOT Harold.
“ Wouldn't it be great if the township administration could work with Weis to expedite (not cut corners) wherever possible to get this store and the new jobs it will bring up and running in 2012!”
I understand your point Harold, but why should Weis be given “Special Treatment?” That is just not fair to everyone else. A corner stone of our very way of life is; One Person, One Vote, and equal treatment for all!
I think too, Harold you’d have to ask yourself how Shoprite and Stop & Shop would feel if the township bent over backwards for just Weis?
Consider how you‘d feel if a large company that specializes in recruiting and career coaching took over the old Cost Cutters site, and you discovered the township administrator was spending the better part of his time hanging out there just to make sure things moved along peachy-keen for them?
BTW, could you provide a detailed first hand account about the problems you’ve had with the building department. Anytime I’ve needed them they have been more then helpful, and frankly, when I failed an inspection, I failed because I did something outside of the approved plan!

Harold, do we know if the hold up is indeed the town process? Per the article:
”Our next step is the construction phase — this store requires a fair amount of work,” said Dennis Curtin, director of public relations, in an email. “We expect to invest several million dollars in this project and plan to reopen early in 2013.”
Maybe Laura can reach out to Gene Strupinsky again as he is mention in the article and appears to be involved. Maybe he can elaborate on the length of the time line. I was at the Promenade last week and it did not look like any construction was going on yet,

I would not read too much in that readers score, number 12 - 8 all have a score of 73, Weis at number 7 has a score of 72, and the complaints are localized for customer service. At number 1 Pathmark had the worse score with a 68. I would have not rated the Hillsborough Pathmark as the Worst Supermarket in America, especially when it came to customer service.
