On September 16, 2012, the Hillsborough Soccer Club Heat Wave (U13 Girls) opened their MNJYSA Fall campaign by traveling to South Brunswick and beating the S.C. Stars 2-1 on a beautiful fall day. Tara Herterich went the full game in goal and was helped by a strong defense and attacking offense that limited the Stars to just two shots in the first half. The Stars barely had a sniff on goal in the 1st half. But when the rare opportunity presented itself, the Stars responded by scoring in the 18th minute off of a hard shot from 20 yards out. Despite the early goal by the Stars, the Heat Wave dominated the time of possession in the first half play, earning 5 corner kicks. Strong shots on goal inside from Allie Benadon and a hard direct free kick from Jess Koval that struck the crossbar kept the pressure on the Stars. However, during the first half the Heat Wave struggled to finish their attacks on goal. With a late 1st quarter counter-attack, the Stars almost extended their lead. The attack was thwarted by Kaitlyn Stanton when she reeled in the Stars attacker and separated her from the ball, allowing defensive midfielder Olivia Panagos to clear the ball from the offensive zone.
The Heat Wave continued to control the flow of the game in the second half with an aggressive style of play. During the second half, the Heat Wave’s struggles with finishing attacks came to an end with a flurry of shots. In the 41st minute, Arshia Arasappan stole the ball deep in the Stars defense and made an impressive move towards the goal. A perfect pass to forward Kendall Smith resulted in a hard shot into the top-right corner of the net and a 1-1 tie. Fifteen minutes later, Kendall Smith returned the favor by feeding Arshia Arasappan at center midfield for a low shot from 12 yards that sneaked past the goalie for the game winner.
