In another dramatic finish, the Somerset Patriots defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, 3-2, at TD Bank Ballpark on Friday evening.
For the third straight game, Johnny Drennen (3) hit a crucial home run, this time a go ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning that gave the Patriots the 3-2 advantage.
The Blue Crabs broke the scoreless tie in the fourth. Brian Barton doubled and came around to score on an RBI double by David Espinosa.
Southern Maryland added their second run on an RBI single by Casey Benjamin that plated Richard Giannotti, who had reached on a one out triple.
Somerset got on the board in the sixth after Lou Santangelo reached on an error and scored on an RBI double by Rex Rundgren to make the score 2-1.
Reliever Derell McCall (1-0) picked up the win for Somerset after tossing three scoreless innings and striking out one batter. Ben Moore (1-1) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs in 7.2 innings pitched. Travis Bowyer earned his first save with a scoreless ninth inning pitched.
