Will You Shop at the New Grocery Store?

When Weis Markets open later this year, they may find it tough to crack Hillsborough's grocery business.

Hillsborough has long had more than one grocery store in town—but for many people, it's just a technical point: The ShopRite in Nelson's Corner rules the local grocery market like Justin Beiber rules pop music.

Sure, some may hit the specials at Stop and Shop, or grab some fresh fruit at the 206 Farmer's Market, but the big money rings up at ShopRite.

Pennsylvania-based Weis Markets thinks they see an opening in Hillsborough, an opportunity for a store offering a different take on the grocery business.

Do you think it will work? Will you shop at the Weis Market when it opens later this year?

Take our poll and tell us if you're counting the days or counting the coupons to take to ShopRite this weekend.

For what it is worth, Weis is a very community orientated company. They also work very hard to make their buildings green and minimize their carbon footprint! Check out their web site.

However, at the end of the day, I like 99.9999999% of all other American consumers always shop where we find the best deals!

Weis is going to fail. It's a typical supermarket and everyone is going to continue to go to Shoprite. The area needs a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. How much do you want to bet that Montgomery or Branchburg gets one and we get screwed once again?

Why do people keep commenting about Whole Foods and Trader Joes??? THEY ARE NOT COMING. You can keep posting it but it's not happening

I've moved from hillsborough to pa and there is a Weis that I shop now. I don't know LisaD if you have ever been in one, but I will tell you I enjoy shopping there. They do have great sales. Same as Shop-Rite with Perdue for instance buy one get one free. The produce dept is also very fresh, nice selection and they also run great sales in the summer. Far more of a selection of goods than a Trader Joes or Whole Foods would have. Try it before you insist it will fail, you might like it and besides, Shop-Rite has gotten dirty.

Carbon footprint, green buildings, what BS! The only green that counts is money. Ask Al Jazeera Gore.

I have several neighbors and friends looking forward to their "Opening Day". Curt- you are right about their history and market place appeal. And they work hard to meet the marketing needs of the local customers. So folks be prepared to contact customer service with what yo EXPECT to see in this new store at Hillsborough. BTW- Shop Rite is the my last choice for shopping marketing in our area. And the 206 Farmer's Market is certainly not my perference either unless I am shopping for flowers. Next time you go there- take in a good sniff of the rank spoling food air. Or you may smell bleach. Either smell is a major turn off to me. Lisa D I wish we could get one of those specialty markets. That is not happening. So I send my hardiest W E L C O M E W E I S !!!!

Shoprite – I hate that place since they saw fit to move everything. That whole area by the butter seems like a fire trap to me, It can’t be legal, I do believe their aisle width there is below the minimum for safety and handicapped access.

Your poll needs another choice. "Yes". Your 2 yes choices have conditions. I'll shop at Weiss either way. I refuse to deal with the crowds at ShopRite(and the parking lot). Stop and Shop is just ok, hopefully Weiss is better than Stop andShop and attracts enough customers to not go out like Pathmark did. Is Shop Rtie really that much cheaper? I have to believe they're cheaper on some stuff and higher on others, I'm guessing a weeks grocery bill is pretty close at either Stop & Shop or Shop Rite

Agreed. I plan trying it but not for the reasons given. I've been to a Weiss store a few times visiting parents and while it's been a few years I remember it being OK.

Although I mostly shop at ShopRite, I don't think it is a quality store. Less often I go to Wegman's and find their prices often beat ShopRIte. ShopRite's produce is terrible. As another commenter noted with strawberries, I've picked up raspberry that were moldy at the store. Even if not they will mold in a few days. I recently got the same brand at Wegman's and they lasted almost a week (before eating all not before rotting). Bananas only last a few days. Same with tomatoes. etc. etc.

Even with non-produce I've taken to looking at dates at ShopRite. Probably a little more than 1/2 the time I've tried to buy Activa, the flavor I've wanted (cherry) has been out of date. I've seen quite a few other canned goods already expired too.

The major plus for ShopRite is knowing where stuff is. I don't like having to wander up and down rows looking something.

Heck Yes! Been driving the extra few minutes to the Shoprite in Somerville whenever I can lately. Much less claustrophobic shopping experience than the Hillsborough store.

I CANNOT wait for Weis!!! ShopRite is disgusting! Fruit flies in the tomatoes, expired hotdogs and bacon, open cottage cheese, moldy strawberries, wet bananas (what is that?).

It's not a matter of choice, it's a matter of differentiation. If Weis can't distinguish itself from ShopRite, it will go the way of Pathmark. That's why something that is perceived to be completely different would have been a better choice. Whole Foods or Trader Joes are different, but they will not come to Hillsborough. Why? Let's take Trader Joes first. The Pathmark location is too big; the old Cost Cutters is a better size. But TJs looks for lots of traffic, on major roads like Rt. 22 and US1, and locations near other attractive shopping, like a mall. The same is true for Whole Foods. They are "destination" stores where people are willing to travel to them, like Wegmans. Yes, Bridgewater will likely get them eventually, but it helps to have major highways nearby. When will we in Hillsborough begin to understand that we are a small community that just will not attract the larger destination chains (yes, we have a Kohls, but it is hardly a destination chain)? Once we accept that, we can move forward in a more realistic manner. Stop dreaming.

SN
I can't wait for Weis to open. I currently go to Wegmans and i would love to find a clean and well organized grocery store near by. Shop Rite fish and produce are not fresh. I hope Weiss market will make my trek to Wegmans a thing of the past.

When Parhmark closed, it seemed like Shop-Rite's prices went up. The produce is awful, the attitude of management is awful, the deli counter is not appealing & all of this is because Shop-Rite is, to a large extent, the only game in town. I now go to Wegman's, where the prices are better, the environment is appealing, the selections are of high quality and interest and the customer service is great.

Did you notice Stop and Shop in there as well. Wegman's prices are high but the store is always clean. I hope someone from ShopRite is reading these posts and will take some of these sugestions or comments and look into them.

I agree about the set up and the feel of Shoprite. Always looks to dirty. I love to buy fruits and vegetables all year round and even drive the extra distance to by them at Wegmans. I hope this store is like that style or it will also go the way of Pathmark. Now Costco is where I will by alot of my fruits. It might be bulk but it is always the freshest and lasts a long time. WEISS you better be worth it!!!!

I'm hopeful that the occupation of the former Pathmark store will breathe a little bit of life back into some of the smaller businesses there. Not that Kohl's and Lowe's need any help, because they don't, but I'd like to see our smaller businesses in that strip mall stay and thrive. I think the addition of a Weis will help that come to fruition.
