The Blockbuster in Hillsborough was one of nearly 500 of the video store chain's locations to recently close.

Now the space, listed at 6,000-square feet by Silbert Realty & Management Co., is vacant along Route 206.

So what would you like to see fill this space?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

I have been dying for Trader Joe's or Whole Foods or Bonefish Grill since forever. They wouldn't fit in the Blockbuster site, but how about the Cost Cutter site?

It seems pretty clear to most of us that Trader Joe's has no immediate interest in Hillsborough. Why do people keep posting that they want one???

Give it up, the 3 of them will not come to Hillsboro, the city of pizza and fast food. We made our grave.

I wonder if Dress Barn would be interested. Modell's would be an option. Lastly, a Party City type of store would add to the variety!

I think that would be a perfect location for a Panera to come---I'm sure they would do very well there too. We could really use a place like that as right now where else can one go to meet someone for a good lunch, along with a visit? Any Panera restaurant that I go to is always packed!!

Bonefish Grill, Baja Frest, Outback, Longhorn, Carabbas...any good restaurants. Town lacks good restaurants! There's only so much pizza one can eat

unfortunately Blockbuster's space wouldn't suffice for any of the above mentioned restaurants---But, we do have other larger empty buildings around the Boro that would be fine for these.

Maybe the better questions is to the town "business advocate" on what is the strategic plan for the type and locations of business we should be attracting to the town to fill all of the vacancies. If he doesn't have a master plan, perhaps he should put together a council of local business leaders, a couple of the business lending officers from some of the many, many, many banks we have in town and some volunteers from the community to put together such a strategic plan. It needs to balance the services needed with the opportunities Hillsborough will provide. I great poll for the Patch would be to collect the list of business most people utilize that are out of town. (It would need to be a long list and allow for people to choose multiple items as well as write in some that are missing.)

As for Blockbuster...good question. I have a number of children and they used Blockbuster a lot. I don't see us subscribing for streaming services. A string of Redbox machines would help until something else came there.

We all need to be realistic. Places like Outback, Carrabba's, Longhorn and even Modell's go into much bigger spaces than the Blockbuster site. Panera is a nice idea. Rich is right about needing a strategic plan as there must be a good reason why Bridgewater attracts the brands Patch readers in Hillsborough keep asking about.

Bridgewater ? A community tied together by 22, 78, 202, 206, 287... and a proven ability to support higher end establishments; and Hillsborough has no history of doing this. Strategic plan or not has nothing whatsover to do with bringing in any of the above suggestions. Cheesecake is in B Mall because the mall built them the restaraunt , but only after Maggiano's proved to be a success; i could go on and on but you get the picture. Location, location and location!

I think Hillsborough's biggest problem is Route 206. The volume of traffic and the mostly 2 lane highway creates such a slow traffic flow that many people avoid the road. I know I do, it is not worth the aggravation. Though I do agree about strategic planning for future busines development; Hillsborough needs to have a cohesive plan to attract businesses.

Agree, there should be a master plan. I like the idea of a fish market. Lobster Dock was so expensive and not enough variety. Loved the family but.....

What about??????
........... stick the "business advocate there for a couple months, and give him the opportunity to have people of hillsborough, ( and even the surrounding towns) have somewhere people can go to make their suggestions on what they'd like to see ANYWHERE in hillsborough. whether it be @ the k-mart plaza, promanade ect.

I would love to see Panera Bread there. I know there is one in Raritan but its always very busy and I think Panera would do very well in this town. Would be nice to bring a childrens store to Hillsborough since Learning Express is gone.

chipotle and panera would be fun. location is far enough south that it might attract some of the lunch business from don in skillman/montgomery... interesting thought.

seems bakers treat in woods tavern is closing as well (sign on door).

We can all wish for what we want, but at the end of the day someone or some company will have to take the risk to use to space to make money. If it is a pizzeria or bank and they make money there, so be it. :-)

A sporting goods store. One that can handle fishing, hunting with bow or rifle and equipped for handgun too. Being able to merchandise all the needed parts in one store without having to run from store to store to get everything you need from live bait,to ammunition and arrows and all the parts to repair everything.

I have no idea. I used to go to the Blockbuster, but sometimes I skipped it because the driveway out of there is very awkward. Even worse if you're coming in from Nelson's Corner.
I miss the Boston Market that became Wachovia. The fact that Boston Market didn't make it there should tell you something about how franchises don't thrive there.

I think a Q'Doba might do okay. I like it better than Chipotle. Trouble is, a place like that probably needs a good lunch and dinner crowd, like the places on Rt. 22 have. I don't think a lot of people go to lunch in Hillsborough.

I think that people don't meet for luncheons in HIllsborough is because there aren't any decent places to meet and visit. CCreations is nice but you're all sitting on top of each other, with the in and out traffic brushing by you all the time too. Not an ideal place for a relaxing luncheon with your friends. Panera is always packed with people doing just that. Bring on a Panera!!!

All the above suggestions would be great. The so called "business advocate" is obviously not listening to the community. There obviously is no vision or master plan. There should be a more aggressive strategy to get well known businesses in Hillsborough.

What about a "real" hometown bakery? Somewhere that you could go in the am get fresh bread, rolls, cookies, cakes, holiday specialties. I wouldn't put Baker's Treat in that category, and Randazzo's is over-rated.

You all want a chain or franchise, yuck! How about a good high quality fair priced private enterprise or two?! Something with the quality of a Uncle Vinnies, larger than the tigers tale but still have that home town feel. We need local sustainable places, nothing will go in here unless it's a cheap franchise food or garbage retail. Hopefully a couple of people will see the opportunity if they have the funds.

It's possible that there are too many commercial properties for how many businesses we can support in Hillsborough. (And yet we will get more.)

I wish it could be an art store (Please, not Michael's!) like Blick or Utrecht, but I know that's not a huge business here. We don't have a nearby Victoria's Secret but that's no place for a store like that. Jimmy John's would be awesome! Less commercial suggestion would be a good place to go for quality lunch or dinner. A small event venue, place for local bands or artists to showcase. Thinking out loud...

Bridgewater Commons is just over 20 minute drive from the part I live in using the back roads and avoiding 206 and the circle. The only time I see a Victoria's Secret store is in a mall, they would never get the business they need in the old blockbuster store to pay the rent. I don't think a lot of the places mentioned would move to Hillsborough when there are other location that people would/could commute to. They do this to avoid cannibalizing the other stores, that is a store here would take business away from their other store and both may wind up being unprofitable.

Well, I already said it's not the kind of place a Victoria's Secret should go but that's merely my opinion. That is what they are asking after all. Pretty sure that's what everyone else is doing too... in depth study of local demographic, average income, competition, business and profit analysis aside.

The bottom line is how difficult it is to get anything built in Hillsborough with all the ridiculous demands of the building department. They make everything take much longer and also much more expensive to build with their red tape and egotistical tyrants running the show. From new businesses, signage and poor homeowners just trying to make simple imporovements they are impossible to deal with without losing your mind, Most builders avoid Hillsborough all together or charge more to work here because they know they will be delayed and aggravated. The population of Hillsborough can support the businesses Bridgewater attracts, but Bridgewater doesn't have our reputation for harrassment by the building dept.. They forget it;s the taxpayers who pay their salaries!
