More than 75 people gathered at the municipal complex's Garden of Honor on Monday night for Hillsborough's fourth annual Veterans Day ceremony recognizing service in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. Those in attendance included local veterans, township officials, Sen. Kip Bateman, Assemblywoman Donna Simon, and Assemblyman Jack M. Ciattarelli.

Lt. Colonel Robert Vicci, a graduate of West Point, spoke about the meaning of Veterans Day.

"Today celebrates who we are as a people and a country," he said.

He also spoke about some of the problems facing veterans returning from combat zones.

"The unemployment rate of our recent vets is 22 percent," he said.

Speaking to those in business and in positions to hire, he said "give our vets a chance."

Veterans Day, which was originally called Armistice Day, was first celebrated on Nov. 11, 1919 to remember the armistice between Germany and the Allied nations which ended World War I. It is celebrated on Nov. 11 recognizing that the armistice came into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
