Route 206 Bypass Completion Date: 2017 or 2018

Councilman: 'This is not what we had hoped for.'

It could take until 2017 or 2018 to complete the 3.5-mile Route 206 Bypass, Councilman Frank DelCore said Tuesday.

Delcore, who gave the report of a recent meeting with state transportation officials, at Tuesday night's Township Committee meeting, said he was assured that the projects would be completed and the $75 million needed to fund the project has been set aside.

The bypass project broke ground in 2010. It is designed to carry Route 206 around an older stretch of the state roadway to improve traffic flow and to allow the township to create a town center along the old Route 206.

“This is not what we hoped for,” Delcore said. “We wanted the bypass to be open in 2014, but that is not feasible.”

The project was divided into two contracts. The first, to build the middle section of the new roadway, is nearing completion.

As a result, Hillsborough Road will open next month, but Homestead Road will close at that time, he said.

The north and south portions of the project are part of Contract B, he said. That section of the contract will cover the construction of new roadway to Old Somerville Road in the north portion and to Mountainview Road in the southern portion.

Among the delays to complete the project, he said, is the need to relocate fiber  optic lines associated with the Century Link telephone and cable hub.

Delcore said he was assured by state officials that the project has “high priority,” in part because it is the only major infrastructure project ongoing in New Jersey.
